I can't believe that Mets lineup won the NL east and then beat the Reds in the playoffs. How did that happen? I watched it then and still don't believe it.

I guess it's better to be lucky than good. There were four teams in the NL West that were better than the Mets--Cincinnati, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Houston. (And an argument could be made for Atlanta, too.) The annual favorite for the NL East title--the Pittsburgh Pirates--were still reeling from the untimely loss of their beloved captain and leader, Roberto Clemente. So the division was ripe for the picking, and the Mets were the club lucky enough to finish on top. And with pitchers like Tom Seaver, Jerry Koosman, and Jon Matlack in their rotation, they were always going to be dangerous in a short series.
