CHICAGO -- Ken Griffey Jr. joined in the hitting frenzy at U.S. Cellular Field on Wednesday, smacking his 609th career home run in the second inning to tie Sammy Sosa for fifth place on Major League Baseball's all-time list.
With Carlos Quentin on first, Griffey drilled R.A. Dickey's 2-2 offering 390 feet over the right-field wall to give the White Sox a commanding 8-0 lead.
The homer was Griffey's 16th of the season and first since joining the White Sox on July 31. It was Griffey's 11th hit with the Sox and first for extra bases. He hit an RBI single and scored in the first inning.
Griffey was playing in right field in place of Jermaine Dye and batting cleanup.
