Why is it that our hitters can't go the other way consistantly like other teams do?

It just seems that all we try to do is yank the ball out of the park (with the exception of a few). I get so sick of watching other teams doing this but we don't. Take Bruce for example, when he first came up, he was hitting the ball the other way, now he is just trying to pull everything. You can't tell me that the hitting coach doesn't know this. He has to see it.

I have noticed that too. Bruce did it when came up, Votto did it all the time, even Phillips would try and go the other way a lot. It seems like as a team this year was a major regression.

Because patient hitters drive the ball the other way a lot of time. We have nobody beside Votto who is patient at the plate, and he drives it the other way. Dusty wants em' hackin at everything over the plate, so they pull everything. Phillips used to make a living the other way, and if he is hitting .270 this year, there is no reason he can't hit .300 if he goes back to his old ways of driving the right center gap. But we will have to wait on new coaches before that happens.

I agree completely and noticed the same trend. Joe Morgan made a comment on "going the other way" on a Sunday night game about a month ago. When asked why more teams don't teach their hitters to do this, he replied that some hitting instructions want their power hitters to focus on pulling the ball. No names were mentioned, but the comment surely seemed to fit the Reds. I recall that when Bruce first came up, everyone commented on his pitch selectivity.

Teams were putting on shifts against Dunn and Griffey and getting away with it. If you were an opposing pitcher and knew that Reds power hitters were operating on that basis, wouldn't you have a tremendous advantage?

If we could get rid of Dusty then we could change a lot about the philosophy of our hitters and their approach
