    The "cellar" buyer?

Anyone understand this philosophy? You know, the team that is about 10 games out of any playoff spot, usually a good amount of games under .500, and has a ton of guys on 1 year deals they might be able to get some decent prospects for by trading and don't. Some even go out and GET players. Best examples this year have been Colorado and Houston. Granted, Houston has made a HUGE run from where they were to get over .500, but they're still over 8 out of the Wild Card. I imagine having management that goes out and gets players for a horrible team gives the team a vote of confidence and shows they're willing not to just throw the season away. I'm not sure if its really worth it in the long run though.

It worked for the Padres and Brian Giles in 2003.

It beats doing nothing. Prime example--2004 Reds.

In a season in which Victor Zambrano and other irrelevant elements netted Scott Kazmir and the Blue Jays over-payed for Lyle Overbay, our favorite team refused to deal Paul Wilson and Sean Casey at their respective highest trade values.

You do whatever is in the best long-term interests of the franchise, whether it is selling or buying.
