    All-Star Bats!

Louisville, KY – Manager Rick Sweet and Catcher Ryan Hanigan have been named to the International League’s post-season All-Star Team today; Sweet is the International League’s Manager of the Year. The winners were selected by the League’s managers, coaches, media and club representatives.

Sweet has led the Bats to the club’s first IL West Division Championship since 2003 and to a franchise best 85 wins (85-52) which is tied for the most victories in all of baseball (MLB and MiLB). His team’s 20-4 record in August is also a franchise record and Sweet recently passed Dave Miley as the all-time winningest manager in Louisville history. In four seasons and 568 games as the Bats’ skipper, his record stands at 300-268; he is fourth on the all-time active manager’s wins list with 1,349 victories.

Hanigan has been selected to the IL Team after anchoring the Bats behind the plate and throwing out 38% of would-be base stealers which is still good for second in the League. Before being recalled by the Reds August 10, Hanigan batted .324 with four home runs and 35 RBI in 75 games with the Bats this season. He was recently named in Baseball America’s Best Tools issue as being the best defensive catcher in the IL. Hanigan was also named to the International League Team for the Triple-A All-Star Game this season.
Since his recall by Cincinnati, Hanigan has started six games for the Reds and is batting .238 with one home run and three RBI; he is currently on a career-high three-game hitting streak (3-11, .273).

No Chris Dickerson on that team? I assume this All Star team is just a list and that they don't play a game, correct?

According to the broadcast today, Hannigan was named the best defensive catcher in the league.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

    2 Dragons named to full-season all-star team

    By Staff report

    Tuesday, August 26, 2008

DAYTON Dayton Dragons shortstop Zack Cozart and third baseman Brandon Waring have been named to the Midwest League Full-Season All-Star Team.

Cozart and Waring were two of 13 players named to the team that was selected in a vote by MWL managers. The team included one player per position with four pitchers.

Cozart has played in 103 games for the Dragons this season and is batting .278 with 14 home runs and 49 runs batted in. Cozart, a product of the University of Mississippi, also leads Midwest League shortstops in fielding percentage.

Waring leads the Dragons in home runs with 18 and runs batted in with 64 while batting .264. He was the starting third baseman for the Eastern Division in the Midwest League All-Star Game in June. Waring played at Wofford College.

Both Cozart and Waring were also selected as the best defensive players at their positions in the league in the annual Baseball America "Best Tools" survey based on conversations with league managers.

    Re: All-Star Bats!

In my copy of the latest Baseball America magazine, 9/22/-08-10/5/08, I see that they have also noted that Rick Sweet was the International League Manager of the year.

I think that is an awesome honor, expecially when you see few Reds left at AAA that make BA's top prospect lists. The Reds raided the Bats early and often, and they still managed to win a franchise record number of games(88). They also were tied with Scranton for the most wins in all of AAA baseball.

I see that Sweet has previously won the Pacific Coast League Manager of the Year honors. Here is a clip from August 26th:

Manager-of-the-Year - Rick Sweet, Louisville 55-year-old Rick Sweet is the 2008 International League Manager of the Year. His Louisville Bats clinched the IL West Division Championship last Thursday, the team's first since 2003. The team's 85 wins are already the most it has ever achieved in the International League, and its .620 winning percentage stands to be the best for any Louisville club since the 1926 Colonels. Sweet, a former Pacific Coast League Manager of the Year, has piloted the Bats since 2005. This weekend he became the franchise's all-time winningest manager. Sweet's club was locked in a tight three-team race for the division title back in late July, but in August the Bats have been nearly flawless, now 20-4 this month. The Bats have lost 16 players to Cincinnati over the course of the season, but Sweet continues to find ways to win. The team's 85-52 record is the best in Triple-A Baseball. Sweet is the first skipper from Louisville to win the IL Manager of the Year Award.
I would swap Rick Sweet for Dusty any day of the week.
