    50 years ago (1958), the Reds split a doubleheader at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis--losing the opener 1-0, and winning the nightcap 9-3.

    In Game 1, Vinegar Mizell pitched a four-hit shutout (with 9 walks!) to get the win for the Cardinals. The only hits for the Reds were a leadoff single by Johnny Temple in the fifth inning, a two-out single by Pete Whisenant in the fifth, a leadoff single by Walt Dropo in the sixth, and a one-out single by Jerry Lynch in the seventh. Joe Nuxhall pitched a complete-game four-hitter in a losing effort for the Reds. The only hits for the Cards were a one-out single by Curt Flood in the third inning, a leadoff single by Vinegar Bend Mizell in the sixth, a leadoff single by Wally Moon in the eighth, and a one-out single by Don Blasingame in the eighth.
