Dayton lost 4-3. Their season is over. It's hard to believe the minor league season is over. It feels like just yesterday was Opening Day.

Yep. It's going to be pretty boring when the Reds season ends.

    4-run 4th inning dooms Dayton
South Bend breaks through against Dragons ace Jeremy Horst to eliminate Dayton from the playoffs.

    By Marc Katz

    Staff Writer

    Wednesday, September 10, 2008

SOUTH BEND, Ind. Mark Haley, South Bend's manager, took a chance Tuesday, Sept. 9, and it worked. He didn't start Jarrod Parker, his best pitcher.

After all, Dayton had to win. South Bend didn't, and Dayton had its best pitcher, Jeremy Horst, on the mound.

"He's good," Haley said of Horst. "After they got that lead, with him going, I thought we were in trouble."

Suddenly, for the first time this year, Horst wasn't so good, South Bend scored four times in the fourth three on a Collin Cowgill homer and the Dragons lost 4-3 and were eliminated from the best-of-three Class A Midwest League Eastern Division championship series, 2-0.

South Bend came from behind in both of the games, after Dayton swept Lansing in the first round of the playoffs.

Second baseman Jake Kahaulelio opened the game with a home run, and first baseman Michael McKennon gave the Dragons a 3-0 lead with a two-run homer in the second. Both homers came off Bryan Henry.

Even with the lead, Horst didn't feel right.

"I wasn't sharp," said Horst, who allowed more than two earned runs as a starter for the first time. "Some games are effortless. They last 20 minutes. Some games seem like they're never going to end. In the fourth inning, I was getting into bad counts."

Horst allowed at least one runner in each of the first three innings. He gave up a run on a single and double to start the fourth, then seemed to work his way out of it with two groundouts.

It was just a mirage. Ollie Linton walked, and Cowgill followed, knocking a 2-0 pitch over the left-field wall at Coveleski Stadium.

After that, both offenses shut down, with South Bend's three-headed bullpen monster of Bryan Shaw, Daniel Schlereth and Clay Zavada striking out nine Dragons in the final four innings.

"It boiled down to one swing of the bat," Dayton manager Donnie Scott said. "It hurts to lose. Still, I'm very proud of the season we had. There wasn't one guy in there that wanted to go home. As (hitting coach) Darren Bragg said, 'All you can walk away with is character.' The guys in there had character."
