Why in the world isn't Dickerson playing Centerfield?

The Creeper brought it up yesterday, but I have been wondering it since the day the kid has come up. If he is going to be a corner outfielder for this team in 2009, we are in big trouble. But, he might be an asset hitting .275 with a dozen home runs, 25 stolen bases and playing well in centerfield. I think he may be able to accomplish the offensive part, but why in the God's Name is he not auditioning for centerfield during the last month of this season? Is there anything to lose by finding out if we might have a guy from within able to fill a major offseason need?

    Unbelievable.

    Integrity.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

    Sore ankle likely the answer.

Anytime CPat is in the game, Dickerson is in LF. If Patterson is sitting, Dickerson has played CF. It's 100% deference to Corey Patterson.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. I'm sure Walt and the Reds already know that Dickerson can play CF. Dusty evidently feels that Patterson is the best defensive CF on the team (or else is totally incapable of playing LF), so he is in CF and Dickerson is in LF when they are both in the game at the same time. I don't agree with Dusty on this one--I think Patterson could handle LF, and my observations indicate that Dickerson's arm is stronger. But the defense is in capable hands in both LF and CF with Dickerson and Patterson--regardless of the alignment. Now the defense in RF sometimes has me concerned, but that's another thread.

    Integrity.
I have observed that "integrity" has become one of those catchwords like "scrappy", that some on RedsZone have latched onto and attacked. Personally, I think that integrity is an important thing, and I agree with Dusty that it is important that the Reds field their best when playing clubs that are in contention. September is not an early start to Spring Training--many of these games mean something. Now if two clubs who have fallen out of contention play each other, then you are more likely to see youngsters in both lineups.

You may not agree that Baker's lineup is the Reds' best lineup (I don't always agree, either), but I think that you would also find that the other contenders are more likely to agree with Baker's assessment than with yours or mine.

Anytime Bako or Patterson are in the lineup, the opposition certainly agree. They get an automatic our or two every time through the lineup. There is no 'agree or disagree' on that. No one on this planet short of Dusty Baker thinks Bako and Patterson should be starting.... September or not. They shouldn't be employed on a 25 man roster, much less in a starting 9.

It boggles the mind. One month of daily reading, but not posting, so as not to violate the board rules on beating subjects to death.

But, really, the entire approach leaves thinking fans speechless.

Is Dickerson still ailing? I know he had a sore ankle for awhile but I figured he was healthy again since he's started the last couple of games. I ask because he's on the bench again tonight.

    Because Patterson doesn't play catcher.
