Or, he may have had a bad night for other reasons....not that anyone on this board would jump to conclusions.

Early this year, Juan Marichal was in the booth w/ Morgan and Co. on a Sunday night baseball game and he talked about that game. He said that Spahn told him afterwards, years later, that he was never the same after that game, too. His arm just was never the same after that game.

There's also this: Warren Spahn was 42 years old at the time, and threw a complete game shutout 5 days later. In fact, he threw 13 more complete games in 1963, after that marathon, and his record the rest of the year after the game in question was 12-3.

Also, that game happened during Marichal's first 20 win season (he was 25 in 1963), and he went on to win 20 games 5 more times in his illustrious career.

This game was right before the All Star break, which may explain why both managers let the starters go so long. Marichal and Spahn both made the NL All Star team that year; mercifully, neither pitched in the All Star game!

Those are facts. How many pitches did Spahn and Marichal throw in that game? Undoubtedly too many, of course, though there is no record.

    Marichal faced 59 hitters, gave up 8 hits, K'd 10 and BB'd 4. Spahn faced 56 hitters, gave up 9 hits, K'd 2 and BB'd 2.

Staggering, and in today's game this is definitely something that we will never see again!
