Jeremy Hermida may be available - should the Reds target him?

    Will Marlins Trade Hermida?
By Tim Dierkes [September 24 at 9:43am CST]

Joe Capozzi of the Palm Beach Post spoke to Marlins right fielder Jeremy Hermida yesterday. Hermida knows the Marlins will be active this winter, and he could be on the trading block again.

Hermida will turn 25 in January. With three-plus years of service time under his belt, he'll be arbitration-eligible for the first time. Instead of $400K, Hermida will earn perhaps $2-4MM in 2009. Trade rumors first surfaced this summer, when Hermida nearly became a Pirate in a three-team Manny Ramirez/Jason Bay deal.

2007 was a very promising year for Hermida - he hit .338/.403/.559 over the season's final three months. An MVP-caliber 2008 seemed possible. Instead, Hermida struggled to a .245/.319/.405 line in a career-high 550 plate appearances. He's been particularly bad since August. Defensively, he's been slightly above average.

Trading Hermida now will be selling low, but the Marlins could save a few million. Still, three years of Hermida won't come cheap. Tossing out a few possible suitors: the Mariners, Nationals, Mets, and Braves.

Seems like a good candidate to buy low on. Get him cheap and hope he rebounds to his '07 form.

Hermida is a guy I've always liked. He's a solid defensive outfielder, is willing to take a walk, and has good power potential that he's yet to tap into. I think he's on the verge of a breakout season soon. Getting him out of the spacious Dolphins Stadium and into Great American Ballpark could help him start tapping into that power potential. I would offer Homer Bailey and Juan Francisco + maybe another prospect and go from there. Hermida in LF, Dickerson/Stubbs in CF, and Bruce in RF would be among the best defensive outfields in the game and would be solid offensively.

I don't think Hermida's defense can be classified as "solid".

Hermida's defense has been slightly above average this season. Put him in left field and it would improve IMO.

Not my first choice, butI wouldn't mind giving Hermedia a shot in LF if we didn't give up too much. If he sturggles a bit, and Dorn starts off hot in AAA, maybe platoon them the second half.

I think I'd rather have Cody Ross though.

    Sounds like Dickerson to me.

Yes.. I think this is one player to persue. He has some pop and has above average defense and a good arm. He is soon to be 25 and could be a potential 25-30 homer guy in this park.

Who are you going to sit in 2010 when we have these three players for the two corner outfield spots and first base--Votto, Bruce, Alonso (not even to mention Dorn and EE)? I don't see adding anybody unless they can play 3B, SS, 2B, C, or CF.

We should worry about 2010 when it gets here. Let's let Alonso spend a full month in the minors before we hand him his spot. If he turns out to be as good as advertised and there is a log jam then there will be trade material to add a piece elsewhere.

I disagree that he's an above average fielder, but I love the idea of targetting him and sticking him in LF. This would be a much better target (given the resources necessary) to pursue than Holliday would be.

No doubt he'd be cheaper to acquire in terms of both cash and prospects.

There's already a logjam in LF if you consider that that's where EE should play. I'd a whole lot rather have a defensive upgrade at 3B who can also hit than another left fielder.

Even if you consider EE a LF, that's one guy, certainly not a logjam.

Thirdbase will be way more difficult to fill in terms of players and money than LF. I'd go with EE at third as his range is fine. I can live with his errors.

Moving EE to LF and having, say, a Keppinger play third isn't going to make the team any better. Offensively, it's like simply having Kepp in LF.

Keep EE at third until someone like Frazier is ready and look for a LF with power.

I'm tending to agree with this. Edwin can make some amazing stops but his arm is just too consistently wild for 3B for my taste. I like the idea of trying him out in LF.

It appears that there's lots of talk about which free agents the Reds should pursue. Most of them tend to be outfielders. At some point they're going to have to find players who can fill other holes rather than stocking up on a dozen outfielders.
