It's rumoured, and the Cards have called a press conference for this afternoon, to announce they have signed Lohse to a long term contract.
The St. Louis Post states that the contract will be in the neighbourhood (my words) of Carlos Silva's 4 year, $48M deal.
Lohse has averaged a 10-11 record, 4.67 ERA over his 7.5 years in the majors.
4 years, $48 million for Kyle Lohse?!? Holy cow. Very bad move for the Cards IMO. Lohse had a solid season but still allowed 211 hits in 200 IP and had a low K/9 rate of 5.32. This could come back to bite the Cards.
Agree with OBM, and I hope the Cards do it. Should backfire on them nicely.

They spent all their money for upgrading the rotation on Lohse. I will be interested to see how they spend the rest of their money.Goold and Strauss say the Cardinals earmarked about $15-16MM for the rotation this winter. That means Lohse is the big signing and the other pitcher will be a bargain buy. The Cards will use another $15MM or so to fill other needs.

That's still fairly brutal. They're paying Lohse like an ace/No. 2 starter when he's actually a No. 4 starter.
How can you say that? The No. 4 is correct but the pay is not close to an ace/No. 2....Have you seen the contracts that aces get?

Here's just a list of pitchers making less or around what Lohse will be getting paid. Those guys are all aces/No.2 starters IMO.

Oswalt: $13.00
They're paying him to be something at or below league average. Basically they are paying him to be 2 to 2.5 wins better than replacement. That's like an ERA of 4.50-4.70 over 200 innings.
Really, they aren't paying him to be an ace. They're paying him to eat innings.

If I were a GM, there's no way I would give Kyle Lohse a 4 year, 41 million contract. That's a bad move IMO. The guy has been very hittable throughout his career and doesn't miss many bats. Like flyer said, this is a good move for the Reds and the rest of the NL Central.
