    Reds decide on Patterson

    Here

    Key point:

CINCINNATI -- Corey Patterson's return to the Reds in 2009 already seemed unlikely as this season closed. Now, it's official

    Also from that article:

Expect the club to make serious efforts to bring back reliever David Weathers and utility player Jerry Hairston Jr.
Forget Weathers, bring back Affeldt. His control improved in the second half and the homers dropped off. He's got a nice arm and may be worth bringing back on a two year deal.

I really had a feeling that Dusty would get Patterson back in the fold.

Looks like Dusty's going to have to go somewhere else for that dowry for his daughter.

    1. bring back Affeldt

    2. bring back Hairston for the right price

    3. offer arbitration to Weathers ONLY if you think he'll decline

    4. let everyone else go. Javy could get a minor league deal as backup ( if he can't get a major league deal elsewhere )

Common sense rules. Finally. To be frank, I didn't understand a lot of what was going in the last couple of years as far as personnel was concerned. I think you'll see a much more reasonable roster under Jocketty.

At least one that looks more like a team than a mumble jumble of overpaid utility players.

I'd agree with keeping Affeldt, but I imagine that will be costly and probably impossible. I'm OK with keeping Hairston, but for the right price. If you consider that his 2008 season was a career year and he likely will revert back to what he's done, you might mwant to take a pass on that. At his age, Weathers needs to go. I imagine he'll be offered a contract and stay, however.

As for Javy, please, please let him go. He takes up space on a roster that could be held by a more capable hitter and lord knows, we don't want him catching.

    Amen.

With 20-20 hindsight, Patterson should have been signed to a minor league contract and stashed at AAA. He might have been able to get his head on straight there. After Dunn and Junior were gone, he might have contributed.

Instead, we got a historically all-time bad season.

You just wait until Dusty has his wish list in spring training. Especially if his daughter is expecting by then........he's got a family to think about.

But could Dusty bring Patterson on board as a special assistant?

    "What's that?" (points to river)
    "Patterson's stuff! Woo hoo!"

Bako, Valentin, Majewski, Andy Phillips, Fogg ... all those bags need to be on the next cart and ready to be heaved over.

This tells me a lot about Walt running the show and not Dusty. Good move.
