    Favorite song by decade

Inspired by M2's band of the aughts thread.

You get one song per decade, and you can start in any decade you want.

    60's Help - The Beatles
    70's Thunder Road - Springsteen
80's Cult of Personality - Living Colour
    90's Possession - Sarah McLachlan
    Aughts Slide - Dido

Today- Animal I Have Become by Three Days Grace

60's - Castles Made of Sand, Jimi Hendrix
70's - Carry On My Wayward Son - Kansas
80's - Tommy The Cat, Primus (I'm cheating because it was written in the 80's and recorded on an album from the 90's, but 80's music pretty much sucked except for the 90's carry-overs)
    90's - Aeroplane, RHCP
    00's - The Pot, Tool

    Re: Favorite song by decade

    I don't need a decade.

My favorite song of all-time is "Blinded by the light", the Manfred Mann version.

It's timeless, as far as I'm concerned.

Here's a stab at it - I may be able to answer the same question with all country and folk tunes depending on my mood! (edited to fix original answers based on a faulty memory - that time from 85-93 all kinda goes together for me!)

60's - All Along the Watchtower (Dylan, but as performed by Hendrix)
70's - Whole Lotta Rosie - AC/DC ("Dream On" is close also)
    80's - Sweet Child O' Mine - Guns 'n' Roses
90's - Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana
00's - Ballad of the Devil's Backbone Tavern - Todd Snider (getting a little more esoteric here, but it's probably here where my music focus was unintentionally narrowed as I discovered in the other thread!)

If you mean a make women and children run away screaming version, then I'd say you're pretty right on.

    Re: Favorite song by decade

It's hard to find any one song to define an era. Especially the 1960's. Growing up then there was just too much going on. Very rapid change was taking effect. For an era that was all about the anti-establishment youth movement that was suppose to have been characterized by peace and love - it was quite violent. And I think that sparked the musical creativity we saw. It was an outlet.

We saw the lovable Beatles go from singing I Want To Hold Your Hand to protest songs like Revolution.....

You say you want a revolution
    Well, you know
We all want to change the world
You tell me that it's evolution
    Well, you know
We all want to change the world
But when you talk about destruction
Don't you know that you can count me out
Don't you know it's gonna be all right

You say you got a real solution
    Well, you know
We'd all love to see the plan
You ask me for a contribution
    Well, you know
    We're doing what we can
    But when you want money
for people with minds that hate
All I can tell is brother you have to wait
Don't you know it's gonna be all right

You say you'll change the constitution
Well, you know we all want to change your head
You tell me it's the institution
Well, you know you better free you mind instead
But if you go carrying pictures of chairman Mao
You ain't going to make it with anyone anyhow
Don't you know it's gonna be all right
    all right, all right

So I think protest songs really characterized the 60's.

    Songs like ....

    One Tin Soldier
    Blowin' In the Wind
    For What It's Worth
He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother
    The End
    Fortunate Son
    Ohio
    War

That all gave way to the 70's.... which I thought was a drag and huge letdown creativity-wise when compared to the 60's. Not saying there wasn't some great music coming out then; but not at the level of the previous decade. You had performers like Boddy Sherman, Osmonds, Three Dog Night, Tony Orlando, and John Denver topping the charts.

    There was quite a difference.

I guess peace really stifles the creative outlets.
"panic" only comes from having real expectations
