    Vernon Wells

Does anyone think the Reds might have interest in this guy? Rumor out of Toronto is he could be available for pitching if AJ Burnett leaves as a free agent (as expected) and they could shift Alex Rios to centerfield.

Is Wells the impact righthanded bat the Reds could be looking for?

I'd rather the Reds go after Rios is we're going after a Blue Jay OF.

Wells' contract would cripple the Reds.

I wouldn't pick up Wells if he was put on waivers.

He's worth less than his contract.

Over the last two seasons, he's basically been Phillips a sa hitter. He plays a nice CF, but isn't close to being good enough to justify that contract.

Small market teams don't get better for the long haul by trading their (cheap) assets for very expensive players. Especialy when those very expensive players aren't that good to begin with.

    Wells:

    08:$0.5M ($8.5M signing bonus payment)
    09:$1.5M ($8.5M signing bonus payment)
    10:$12.5M ($8.5M signing bonus payment)
    11:$23M
    12:$21M
    13:$21M
    14:$21M

$20M+ for the CF version of Phillips? No thanks.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

    Well, here is another idea....

Would you trade Bronson Arroyo for Alex Rios?

You could replace Arroyo by signing a sinkerball pitcher like Derek Lowe to take his spot in the rotation.

    Opinion?

I'd do that in a heartbeat, but I doubt the Blue Jays would.

    I'd even throw in Hopper.

I would think maybe a prospect would have to be included but that wouldn't seem that far fetch if they lose AJ.

If Rios would become available, Arroyo won't be a centerpiece of the deal that lands him.

I do like the idea of Wells in a Reds uni in 09 but Toronto would have to at least pick up the signing bonus to get things rolling.

I doubt the Jays would have much interest in Arroyo after what they did to him in June.

    Re: Vernon Wells

Even if you can land Rios for Arroyo I don't think the Reds have a good shot at signing Lowe - and if they did it would be for a lot more than they are going to pay Arroyo. Just my opinion.

    Arroyo for Rios?

    Abso-freakin-lutely.

    That's a no-brainer.

    Oh, I agree.

Bronson would have to be a throw in if we got Rios.

We'd have to structure the deal with Bailey and probably Stubbs, and then another bat spec and another arm spec.

Then, if Arroyo was thrown in, we'd probably get some garbage MR back, or some utility guy (like we don't have enough of those...).

Not that I think Arroyo is only worth just a MR, but I don't think Toronto would be a good destination for him.
