5 spots and in a heart beat. Bad part is Krivsky is not doing the mining like in the past. In Walt we must trust but he is very old school and I wonder if he can adapt to the new guys rules and perception on skill sets of players.
    2006 Redzone mock Draftee's- 1(st) Daniel Bard(redsox), 1(st sup)( Jordan Walden (Angels), 2(nd) rd.- Zach Britton(Orioles), 3(rd) Blair Erickson(Cardinals), 3(rd) Tim Norton( Yankees),(cuz its a Tim Hortons thing

Re: How much room would you create on the 40 man roster?

    Goodbye:
Jeremy Affeldt (I want the draft pick)
Matt Belisle (only in a trade; I wouldn't non-tender him)
    Josh Fogg (obviously)
Mike Lincoln (I'd keep him if the price is right, but I like the in-house options more i.e. Ramon Ramirez, Josh Roenicke, Danny Herrera, Carlos Fisher, Robert Manuel, etc.)
Bobby Livingston (barely throwing over 80
Gary Majewski (only in a trade; I wouldn't non-tender him)
    Kent Mercker (retired)
Ty Pelland (I heard he just had shoulder surgery?)
Dave Weathers (I want the draft pick)
    Paul Bako (obviously)
Javier Valentin (not really a catcher; if he were than a first baseman, I'd consider it)
Jerry Hairston, Jr. (injury prone; 2008 was probably a huge fluke)
    Andy Phillips (dime a dozen)
    Corey Patterson (obviously)
Norris Hopper (but I'd be willing to wait until after the winter meetings)

Re: How much room would you create on the 40 man roster?

they'll move some guys onto the 40 man to protect them from Rule 5 draft. Not too many, because the Reds didn't draft well three years ago (what a break). Fisher, Lecure, and a lot of maybes: Jukich, Cumberland, Henry, Manual, Castro, Valiquette. Reds are looking carefully at several of those guys right now, as they play in late fall leagues. I can't recall if Travis Wood is eligible-- do HS draftees still get an extra year?

Might be more-- I don't have signing dates on several Latin players. for instance, Viola may finally need to be protected

noticed how Rule 5 is becoming more productive in general in baseball? Reds scored their first success ever with Hamilton and Burton, but there are several other recent successes, including Victorino, who's a key player tonight.

teams are more aggressive in protecting their toolsy youth, allowing more older, accomplished players to fall through the cracks.

Travis Wood is not eligible, and I'm guessing there's no chance that Jose Castro nor Phil Valiquette will be added to the 40-man roster.

Tim Layana was a Rule 5 player as a reliever for the 1990 Reds.
Eric Stratton, Rush Chairman. Damn glad to meet ya.

Re: How much room would you create on the 40 man roster?

I believe these are the most important of the guys who need to be protected, and my cutoff line. So I guess that means I need 7-8 spots freed up at minimum and more if I wanna add FA's.

    S. Henry
    Cumberland
    Maloney
    Fisher
    Geronimo
    Manuel
    Viola
    -------------------
    LeCure
    Gutierrez
    Eyemann
    Mike Griffin
Smit (Not sure about his status, exactly)

Eh, I wouldn't worry about Jocketty in the rule 5. K had some success but he also let Cantu go to pick Valenzuela. I'm not trying to start that Cantu thing up again but to point out what a preposterous pick Valenzuela was. Also, the Reds are becoming deep enough and have guys reaching the protect point that may be better than anyone they can grab. I'm more concerned that Jocketty get THAT right. Leave the right guys unprotected. That's the sign a farm system is getting there - when who you might lose is more important than who you might pick up.

right, Maloney. Forgot that he wasn't on the 40 man already

Smit's already been on a 40 man, so could be claimed. No loss.

What's Daniel Dorn's status? If he is one that would be exposed to the Rule 5, I would want to protect him as well.

Protecting Carlos Fisher is a must. He would definitely be picked and is good enough to stay on a 25-man roster all season long. Maloney, Viola, Manuel, and Henry are the others I would make sure to protect. I don't see Geronimo and Cumberland being picked and staying on a roster all season long. Same with Lecure.

Re: How much room would you create on the 40 man roster?

So it's bye-bye to the following:

    Belisle (60 Day DL)
    Fogg (60 Day DL)
    Livingston
    Majewski
    Mercker (60 Day DL)
    Pelland
    Bako
    Valentin
    A. Phillips
    Hopper (60 Day DL)
    Patterson

That's only 7 spots freed up because of the 4 who are not even on it. So if you wanna keep any of them it will take away from that 7.

Plus 2 more on the 60 Day:
    Gonzo
    Freel

    Also we have these FA's:
    Affeldt
    Hairston
    Weathers
    Lincoln

Which means if we re-sign Hairston & Weathers and put Belisle, Gonzo & Freel back on the 40 man we have a whole 2 spots to work with and that's not including Valentin (who they may re-sign), Affeldt or Lincoln.

Obviously he's one I would protect but I'm not sure he's at risk, I don't believe he is.

I think Lecure will be protected by the Reds. it'll be interesting to find out.

    Dorn's got another year, IIRC
