Wow. James thinks Dickerson is going to go wild! If that's true, the Reds definitely have their CF situation solved. Not a bad sophomore season for Bruce and Votto either.

I'd take those lines from Dickerson in a heartbeat. 21 HR's and a .360 OBP? Give me that. I liked Hanigan's rate stats until I saw just 102 at-bats.

Doesn't look like he is too fond of the Reds pitching.

Only one pitcher with an ERA under 4.00, and that's Cordero at an ugly 3.53.

The pitching staff is projected to go 72-78. I'm guessing the other 12 games will be suspended due to a players' strike or dirigible crash or something.

Or come from pitchers not yet on the team.

I'm surprised by the optimism of the offense, but like bucksfan2 said, he doesn't seem to optimistic about the pitching. Mike Lincoln with the third-best WHIP on the staff? Yikes.

If Joey Votto puts up those numbers he better get some MVP consideration.

Re: 2009 Bill James Projections for the Reds

Wow, he's projection huge seasons from the young hitters. A .891 OPS for Bruce, .814 from Dickerson with 21 homers and 37 stolen bases, and a .922 OPS from Votto.

But I also think he sells the pitching short. I think he's right on with Arroyo but off on the others. That's a solid season from Harang but I expect him to return to his 2005-2007 form. While I don't expect Cueto to develop into an ace just yet, I do think he'll take a step forward next season with at least a league average or better ERA and a strikeout per inning. He's also got Volquez taking a step back. I don't see that happening. Volquez's curveball seemed to improve throughout the season, plus he's now got a full season under his belt...I think he'll be as good, if not better than he was in 2008. As for the bullpen projections, I don't see Majewski and Lincoln on the 2009 team, especially Majewski. Burton has a 2.92 ERA in 101.2 career IP, there's no reason he can't repeat that. Affeldt should be better too.

I like the hitting projections but I think he's far off on the pitching projections.

I think it's obvious that he's putting a lot of weight on the ballpark.

Not much love for the pitchers. If Dickerson puts up those numbers it should silence those who are calling for the return of C Patt for CF and leadoff.

If those pitching projects are on, the Reds should fully expect to finish last, maybe 2nd to last at best in the division.

Re: 2009 Bill James Projections for the Reds

    Bronson Arroyo - 205 IP, 4.20-4.35 ERA, 160 K
    Johnny Cueto - 180 IP, 4.40 ERA, 175 K
    Aaron Harang - 210 IP, 3.85 ERA, 180 K
    Edinson Volquez -200 IP, 2.75-3.20 ERA, 215 K

That's along the lines of what I expect from our four rotation locks. That's assuming the Reds improve their defense. I went with a safe projection on Cueto, I think he could do much better than that but he's still young and inexperienced and will battle some ups and downs.
