The Reds are loaded at SS. Why would they want another one? :

Loaded with quantity, but definitely lacking in quality.

Sure, we have plenty of warm-bodies who can stand at the position, but not many that can actually field the position.

Conversely, the guys we have who can actually field the position can't hit worth a lick.

Great problem to have for this organization...

    To replace Ozzie Smith, IIRC.

Although, now that I'm trying to remember, maybe that was Royce Clayton that replaced Ozzie Smith?

    Someone help me out here.

His offense declined from his career averages this past year, so age might be catching up with him. It depends on the price, though.

Didn't we have this very same discussion less than a month ago?

We did and , the conclusion was it was a bad idea then and is a bad idea now. Spend the bucks on a serious bat and another arm and run with that coming in next season, oh and fill out the bench better.

Thing is... who is going to play SS? Paul Janish proved his bat is not the answer. Alex Gonzalez hasn't been healthy in 3 years and hasn't played ball in 3 years.. he is going to be ready? Jeff Keppinger proved this year he cannot play everyday at SS.

After last year Renteria likely would sign a one year deal for relatively cheap or an incentive laden 2-3 year contract. I say go for it. Definitely would be an improvement over what we have seen at SS since Barry Larkin retired.

Gonzalez missed last year...as far as I can recall he played for the Reds the year before that, he missed some games because of his sons health and played every day for the Red Sox the year before that...am I confused?

He didn't play every day for the Red Sox in '06, either. He missed about a month with some injury, and was given plenty of days off just to get another LHH in the lineup against the tougher RHPs.

Renteria isn't very likely to be much of a defensive improvement over almost anyone.

To say they're both past their primes would be an understatement.

there is your shortstop for '09 in Cincinnati. It might be a decent idea. Maybe he could get EE straightened out.
