Reds interested in Mets Catcher Brian Schneider

Per MLB trade rumours and the New York Post:
"The Reds like young backstop Ryan Hanigan, but they are still in the market for catchers. Fay says Jocketty chatted with the Rangers regarding their surplus, though a recent report didn't have Cincinnati in the mix. Joel Sherman seems to indicate the Reds have interest in the Mets' Brian Schneider. "

    NEW YORK POST:

"There are some Met officials who believe they need a better game-caller than Brian Schneider to shepherd their pitching staff. The Mets did find some interest (Cincinnati, for example) if they need to move Schneider"

I have a hard time believing Schneider would be an upgrade over Hanigan.

I think it's to share time with Hannigan.

I still wouldn't give up much to acquire him.

Especially if they don't think much of Schneiders game calling skills.

Well, he looks like an older version of Hanigan to me, probably with a weaker throwing arm; that's not necessarily a bad thing though. I would like to bring him in (as always the caveat is at the right price) because he is one of those rare catchers who actually hits RHP better than LHP. He could easily hit .260/.340/.400 here and he plays okay defense. A much better target than Gerald Laird because of price, I think Walt should go for it. Chances are one of two will pan out and be a reliable starter in 2009...

I was just about to say the same thing BC. I don't know much about him defensively, but offensively he looks like an older Hannigan. There are certainly worse options out there. I'd much rather Schneider than giving up something significant for Gerald Laird or bringing back Javy.

Personally, I wouldn't mind have Dave Ross back, but I know I'm in the minority there.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

I'd say you're in the minority on Javy as well. EVERYONE wants Javy.

I could live with that. Dave Ross has a .744 career OPS! (2008 NL average for catchers: .715)

A duo of Hanigan and Ross aren't going to win the Reds many games but I think they could do a passable job, and do it for cheap.

Offense isn't Ross' problem. I want the catcher to actually be able to catch the ball.

I'll admit I have little insight on how to evalute catchers defensively. But I can't help but think that his defensive shortcomings are overstated by members of this board, since over the past couple seasons we all watched Dave Ross play a lot more than other MLB catchers.

Could be, but I've been watching baseball since the mid sixties. I've seen a lot of catchers play even if I haven't seen much of the current guys in San Diego or Seattle. I think 40+ years is a pretty adequate frame of reference. I will admit that recent guys are the only ones we see day in and day out, so maybe there is something to your point. FWIW, I thought Jason Larue was pretty bad on defense as well for the exact same reasons that I question Ross. Maybe I was spoiled by watching Johnny Bench for so long.

OTOH, I saw a lot of Bako last year too though, and while I thought he was pretty stinky all around, he was a better catcher on defense than David Ross IMO.

I wouldn't be opposed to seeing Ross back either. As for Schneider, you could do a lot worse for a platoon with Hanigan. It all depends on what it would take to obtain him. I don't think it would be all that much, considering that Schneider is due $4.9M in 2009.

I'd take my chances with Hannigan before making a deal with Javy, Ross or Schneider.

Hannigan and just about any other young catcher would be better than bringing back the likes of Javy or Ross.

Good catchers are hard to find, I'd rather roll the dice on two younger ones than pay for the incompetence of Ross or Javy.
