    Re: Dunn in free agency

Didn't see this recent update anywhere, so thought this thread would be a good place.

For those who want a digest version: Dunn is sitting on an offer from the Nats, waiting to see if he'll get an offer from the Dodgers or elsewhere.

    Here it is:

    Nationals still waiting on Dunn

The market has been mostly quiet for free agent slugger Adam Dunn, but a baseball source said Dunn did receive a contract offer from the Nationals, who badly want a power hitter. The Nats targeted Dunn after making a spirited free-agent run at Mark Teixeira, who signed with the Yankees. But so far, Dunn hasn't seemed eager to sign with Washington.

Dunn could still wind up in Washington, but the Nationals' offer has sat there so long he's sent a clear message he'd prefer to go elsewhere. One other possibility for Dunn could be the Dodgers if they aren't able to work out a contract with Manny Ramirez, who is by far their first choice to enhance their offense.

Dunn was hoping to hit the jackpot in the free-agent market, and one baseball executive said he believes former Dunn teammate Brandon Phillips' contention that Dunn was hoping for a $100 million contract. Dunn has disputed that story. In any case, he's not going to come close to hitting his free-agent goal. His agent Greg Genske, who did nicely to get a $161-million deal for CC Sabathia, did not return phone calls over the past several weeks.

One executive said Dunn's biggest problem, other than a nightmare of a free-agent market, is that he is "really an American League player'' and that there aren't many teams looking to pay a DH big bucks. Oddly enough, Dunn has played his entire career in the National League, and the two teams connected to him now are both NL teams.

If I'm Dunn, I take a short term contract at lesser money with a decent team rather than go to the Nats. Who would want to play for a Jim Bowden led team? This poor guy has played for teams with losing records for his entire career now, including his stint with Arizona. I wonder what the record is for consecutive losing teams?

Adam, you're not going to starve wherever you go...Go ahead and join a winner. You've suffered enough. Don't put yourself through any more of it.

I understand that sentiment, but if 1 team is offering me 12M per for 4 years and 1 team is offering me 10M for 1 year then I'm taking the longer deal.

This may be Dunn's best shot at big money. An off-year or injury in 09 would complicate things for him in next year's market -- one can never be sure -- so I'd think it would be difficult for him to turn down 30-40 million in favor of 10. Somehow I don't see the "suffering" of playing major league ball as a young millionaire to require the antidote of playing for a contender, if a non-contender is offering 3-4 times the dough.

This isn't the NFL. I don't see it as a choice between $10 and $40mill.It's very unlikely that something so egregious happens this season that he'd never make another dollar in the next 3 yrs. If he takes a 4 yr deal now then he's saying that even with the economy and all that this is as high as his value will go.

According to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, major league sources say the Angels have spoken to Bobby Abreu's agent and have expressed interest in Adam Dunn. When Rosenthal asked Angels GM Tony Reagins about the club's interest in the two players, Reagins said "If something makes sense for us, we'd look at it."

I'd like to see Dunner sign with the Angels. The Angels are always competitive and he could put up some big numbers with Vlad behind him.

I wonder how many posts will finally fill up this thread. We're at 981 and nothing new has come to light. Time to move on.

I think we'll break 1000 once he signs somewhere. Especially if people keep posting when no real new news has happened. Like now.

I'd like to see that too. But Scioscia is a manager who likes speed and contact at the top of the order and he would no doubt bat Dunn cleanup...
