Who I think Walt will target(in no order):
    Scott Posednik CF
    David Eckstein SS/2b
    Jeremy Affeldt RP
Gabe Kapler CF (Would be a very good RH platoon with Dickerson, hit .354 against lefties last year and an overall .301/.340/.498, in 229 AB's)

    Re: FA Bargin Shopping

To be honest I don't think I would add any expensive position players for the 2009 season. With the potential to have a 2010 lineup of:

    Stubbs/Dickerson CF
    Votto LF
    Frazier 3B
    Alonzo 1B
    Bruce RF
    Phillips 2B
    Valaika SS
    Hanigan C

I'd be looking to add quality pitching as you can never have too much, but I don't want any FA or trades to block the path of our young, productive bats.

Unless the Reds can get a real good bat for relitivly cheap, I'd almost rather let the youth movement take over.

i'm for the youth but we need someone in left. we don't currently have the kind of reliable depth at the mlb level.

Let Freel or Hopper play it this year for all I care. The calvery arrives in 2010.

these when I say bargin shopping, I'm talking about bench players. They certainly won't be blocking and young guys. I would love to actually have a good bench this year with a Kapler/Dickerson (whomever isn't playing in CF) coming into the game in the late innings could be very useful.

Call me crazy, but what if the reds rolled the dice and signed joe crede? Crede is one of the best defensive 3B in the majors when he is healthy. He was among the leaders this year in the plus/minus fielding system and he only played 97 games and he wasn't even completely healthy when he played. He is a below average hitter for third basemen, but the difference between his defense and Encarnacion's would more than make up for Crede's offensive issues, not to mention, Crede could post an OPS around .800 if he has a good year and stays healthy. I think it would be tough to get Crede for a one year contract because Scott Boras is his agent, but if he would sign a one year, incentive-laden deal, I think he would be a big help to the Reds in the upcoming season.

well i for one would like the reds to win at least a few more times in '09. that won't happen if we slot freel/hopper into left.

i like crede as an option but his health/back is a big red flag and because of that i doubt he'll be picked up early. it would have to be a conditional/incentive laden deal to be safe and i'm not sure borass would do that.

    Re: FA Bargin Shopping

Go with the youth movement this year, let Alonso come play 1st, Votto to left, Sign Hairston and let him hit left handers and Dickerson hit right handers, fill your bullpen gaps because Stormy and Affeldt are all but gone. Then in 2010, alot of "good players" will be hitting FA Market, then get your right handed bat with power. Keep EE one more year at 3rd.

I'd love to see Brad Ausmus on a 1 year deal, Casey Blake to play 3B and bat 5th, Juan Cruz and Jeremy Affeldt as the #2 and #3 bullpen guys, and Jerry Hairston Jr. as a super sub or platoon CF with Dickerson.

lots of injuries, but dare I say Nomar for the 3 bag?

    Furcal for SS.

    Furcal
    Nomar
    Votto
    Phillips
    Bruce
    EE (LF)
    Dickerson
    Hanigan

    Re: FA Bargin Shopping

Guys I think the Reds could realistically/should go after:

C-Pudge Rodriguez- worked well with the Marlins and Tigers young pitchers. Yes he old but what better do the Reds have at the position

C-Michael Barrett- wouldnt cost a ton and better than what we got

3B-Mike Lamb- again wouldnt cost a lot ...ship out EE

SS-David Eckstein- Walt should ahve the connection with him.

Relievers: Juan Cruz (might cost a lot as far as a reliever goes), Demarso Marte (also might cost a pretty penny), and resign Affeld.

What calvary in 2010? Yes there are some guys pumped up here on redszone but most scouts dont give the Reds much credit wise after Jay Bruce.

They will not push some of those guys. Most are at least a year away. I know that Walt has stressed certain things this offseason. He wants a right handed rbi guy, a centerfield/leadoff guy, and a catcher. Past that, I don't believe that there will be any moves of any consequence.
