    Hampton Seeks One-Year Deal
By Tim Dierkes [November 21 at 11:32am CST]
ESPN's Jerry Crasnick spoke to Mike Hampton's agent Mark Rodgers, who said, "We're looking for a straight one-year deal - no option, no nothing." Hampton obviously just wants to re-establish himself as a healthy, useful starting pitcher after so many lost seasons. It's unclear whether Rodgers' statement means Hampton will avoid incentive-based offers.

Crasnick says Hampton wants to pitch near his Arizona home, but the Braves, Astros, Padres, Giants, and Cardinals could be fits. Astros GM Ed Wade said recently he's had dialogue with Rodgers and Hampton is open to returning to Houston. The Braves have also had dialogue.

Hampton, 36, posted a 4.17 ERA in 11 starts over the season's final two months. Still, his peripheral stats were not impressive during that period.

If we're gonna think about giving Mulder a shot, might as well inquire on what Hampton would be asking for as well. See if we can get a productive year out of him, or even just a half a year and get a pick or some spects out of him when he is traded or sent to FA.

there may not be any harm to take a look if he's very cheap and will take a minor league contract. otherwise i'd pass. we have better options in house now. and no team would deal any real prospects for him mid season unless he really, really bounced back and, while it's possible, it isn't likely. there also wouldn't be any FA compensation until he can have a couple decent seasons.

Between him, Arroyo, and Owings you could put on a pretty good pitchers BP show. Youd just have to figure out a way to get CC here to round out the quartet and challenge baseball to a pitchers Home Run Derby.

I wouldn't even waste the time. Look at the teams he directly mentioned all were either "close" to Arizona, had ties to (Atlanta), or in the race last year. After the season we had and our ballpark theres 0 incentive for him to come here given those perameters.

This would be a 0 risk 0 reward type move. Save the minutes and move on.

like i said before "there may not be any harm to take a look if he's very cheap and will take a minor league contract." i just don't think you could expect much in return for him.

Threin lies the problem. Not many pitchers are gonna want to come to Cincy until something is done to move the fences back. Not unless we way overpay for them and there's no better offer on the table. Virtually EVERYTIME the Reds are mentioned in an article or discussion, the small park dilemma is brought up, it seems.

the talk of the fences is a little overdone imo. yes it would cut down on hrs but who knows how much. improved defense would help too. and it also helps alot if a team doesn't allow alot of baserunners. solo shots won't beat you. those 3 run shots do.

He's not worth it. Hampton is done, IMHO. Surprised he wont give it up.

Hampton's toast. I'd rather see Walt take a shot at Mulder if he's looking for a low-risk reclamation project.

If we were in Philly's position I'm sure the stadium would be less of an issue but were going on almost a decade since our last winning season. That in lies my biggest problem with these type of moves. It may not make you worse than last year but it does NOTHING to significantly improve this team.

We were 74-88. You can say that the pitching staff could be improved with just the fact Cueto will have more experience, Harangs healthy, etc, etc, etc but even if you assume thats good for 10 wins (extreme high end) thats still leaves you to make up probably 10 more wins to be in contention in the division and wild card. Hampton won't make enough of a positive difference to bring in. In fact with recent history I would say Hampton is more likely to be a net negative. Save the minutes and not even bother.
