#19 UC vs. #20 Pitt - Major Big East Championship Implications

    So here we go ...

Pitt rolls in to Nippert next Saturday night to take on UC, and while the game won't officially settle the Big East Championship, it will go a long, long way to determining who's going to win the Big East and land the automatic BCS bid, which will likely send the Big East champ down to Miami for the Orange Bowl. If UC beats Pitt, then all that will stand in the way of a Big East title will be a home game in two weeks against 2-8 Syracuse. If UC loses to Pitt, things will get very interesting and UC will still have a chance to win the Big East, albeit a very small chance.

Nippert will be absolutely rocking next weekend, and I'm expecting a sellout for the biggest game in UC's history. I'll be heading down with a group of a half dozen people to partake in the craziness.

Weather doesn't look too bad, though we're still six days out. Currently they're calling for a high of 47 and a low of 33 on Saturday with a 20 percent chance of precip.

Without hyperbole, this is the biggest game in UC football history.

I've got two tickets. Me and a friend are making the trip. It should be really fun.

The early line has UC (-5). Vegas has a little more faith in the Bearcats than I do, to be honest.

To all the UC fans in Cincinnati, buy some tickets. They still have groups of four for sale on Catstix.com. We need a sellout. This is getting rediculious. UC needs to have the stadium rocking, and we need every seat filled. I've done my part. Go buy some tickets, and show your support. Get ready for the biggest game in UC history!

I'll be in the lair. I can't wait. Nippert will be absolutely crazy on Saturday. Win this game, and I'll be making a trip to Miami for the Orange Bowl (or New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl).

This is the game that could go down in history as "the one" that sent the University of Cincinnati football program to the next level.

Win this game, and you get to play on the biggest of national stages with a chance to announce to the world (and recruits around the country) that UC Football is ready to join the world of major college football. Win the BCS game that follows, and you get the opportunity to start the next season ranked and have a legitimate chance to compete for a national title.

    That's what this game means.

    No pressure, kids.

My heart is already thumping, I can't imagine what BK is thinking right now. One win could completely change everything football in Cincinnati. A win here would bring more money to the program, more recruits, and more positive national press.

I'm fairly confident UC will pull out a win since the game is at home. I think the game in Morgantown two weeks ago was tougher, especially given the atmosphere UC was playing in that night.

That much said, I'm expecting a close game as these two teams are fairly evenly matched. If UC can win the turnover battle and not shoot themselves in the foot with penalties, we'll be in nice shape. I think we've got an edge in special teams* all around, and our advantage there should help us win the battle for field position to make things a little bit easier on the offense and defense.

*I think Rogers will hopefully be ok even though he's missed four straight field goals. He'll be at home on the familiar Nippert Field turf, and it should be dry. If it isn't windy, he should be ok.

Re: #19 UC vs. #20 Pitt - Major Big East Championship Implications

    Josh Katowitz blog update ...

    http://gobearcats.cstv.com/sports/bl...111708aaa.html

(12:13 p.m.): BK was asked today about how, after UC has played back-to-back emotional games (with back-to-back emotional wins), the Bearcats can continue to play without a letdown. At some point, you’d think, the Bearcats would go into a game mentally exhausted and not perform well enough to win.

I theorized that time might come last Friday at Louisville – even though I did, in fact, pick UC to win the game. Short week after a program-changing win at West Virginia, another road game, etc. I thought it was a possibility the Bearcats could come out flat. Obviously, that wasn’t the case.

    Why not?

“At this time of the year, if you don’t have enough in the tank … to me, it’s 18-to-22 yea r-old kids,” BK said. “We gave them a few days off. We don’t grind them out. They’ll be at full strength. There won’t be any excuses for us because we’re tired. We were tired last week, back to back on the road, you’re on the bus again. That can get your team tired, but we’ll be fine this weekend.”

After the game Friday, he also made this point:

“It’s what has to happen if you’re going to win a Big East championship. You’re going to get caught on the road, playing an emotional game like West Virginia. But you know what? Nobody cares. You have to win the game. You have to find a way. That’s why I’m happy with the way we played in the second half. We won the second half, which allowed us to win the football game.”

    -----

BK doesn’t seem worried about Jake Rogers’ confidence. He said the problems against Louisville stemmed from a wet ball and an improper technique.

“It’s interesting,” BK said. “It’s the development of a kicker. Earlier in the year, he struggled mentally. This time, it was technique. He has a natural draw on his kicks, but they didn’t draw because of the wet balls. He hit all of them well, but he missed all of them to right. Then he overcompensated. I’m sure he’ll be able to correct it for this weekend.”

I’m not sure I completely buy that (remember how badly Rogers flubbed that kickoff following the missed field goal? That’s what has happened to Rogers when his confidence goes). But I’ll guess we’ll see how Rogers performs on Saturday – and how much confidence BK has in him.

    -----

Don’t know if you caught this quote from BK regarding a potential sell-out for the Pitt game. If not, give it a read:

“It is the biggest game in school history. There’s no question about that. If that place doesn’t have 500,000 people in it, I’m going to be pissed. We have done everything to elevate this football program. If you can’t support us next week, there’s nothing else we can do. We’ve won, we’ve been consistent, it’s time now for our fans to show up. They’ve been good, but it should be the hardest ticket to get in Cincinnati.”

With that, I called Lindsey Delscamp in the ticket office this afternoon, and she said only a couple thousand tickets remain. She said UC “sold a ton” of tickets during the weekend, and it wouldn’t be surprising if those tickets are gone in the next day or two. Plan accordingly.

    -----

And one last thought about Greg Robinson, who was fired Sunday, from Louisville coach Steve Kragthorpe.

“I think Greg is a great person,” he said. “I think he’s a great football coach. Unfortunately in this industry, if you don’t win football games, you don’t get to work anymore. With the timing, that’s a move a lot of guys are making nowadays, making a change earlier if a change is imminent to get somebody in place for recruiting.”

35 bucks is the best you'll do at this point unless you can find a student who is lucky enough to get one of the few student guest tickets. You better believe that none of the seats in my season ticket block are going to waste.

I'm a student, but the guest tickets were long gone before I could get two of them. I'm trying to scrounge up enough money to get two regular tickets for some friends.

Per BCI, the ticket office expects a sell-out before COB Wednesday. I've also read that there might be some $10 overflow seats made available to students.

Give the ticket office a call and see what they say. 1-877-CATS-TIX

I have no idea if this is true, but the latest I'm hearing is only 3,000 tickets remaining.

If anybody doesn't already have tickets, get on www.catstix.com and grab your seats now.
