Reds and White Sox discussing Dye

This from a diary on Red Reporter referencing Lance's blog:

    Things I'm told
MLB sources tell me the White Sox and Reds are involved in trade talks. I'm told the White Sox initiated the talks. The potential deal involves the Sox sending RF Jermaine Dye to the Reds in exchange for Homer Bailey and another player.
    What do you think?
Dye is a right handed run producer that plays RF. He will be 35 in January.
He leads all AL OF in HR's since 2005 with 137.
He has a gun for an arm, but does not move well in the OF.
Money wise: Here is his contract situation.
    20009:$11.5M
    2010:$12M mutual option ($1M buyout)
He has a limited no trade clause
Homer is 22-years old and has thrown just 81.2 major league innings.

wow. I think that is an absolutely awful idea.

Dye is a good hitter, no doubt about that. But he'll turn 35 years old in January and he's bad defensively. I'm not ready to give up on Homer Bailey. I'm not saying I wouldn't trade him because I would for the right return, but I don't think Dye is the right target. Homer will turn 23 in May. 23. He's still got plenty of time to figure things out.

Go after a guy like Adrian Beltre and move Edwin to left field.

I agree. I'm fine with dealing Bailey for something useful but Dye isn't the right return in my opinion.

I think its more because he has OPS'd 1.006, .804 and .885 over the last three years. Sure he bats right handed, but he bats right handed pretty darn good and I think that pretty darn good part outweighs which side of the plate he hits on. I think it could be selling low on Bailey as well though.

I like Dye as a target.

I don't mind Dye as a target either but I don't know that I'd give up Bailey to get him.

I think I'd rather take my chances on a Delmon Young. Ken Rosenthal says he's available. No, he's not a Dye yet but he's got the potential to be, plus he's much younger and cheaper and won't cost as much in terms of prospects. This team has a good young nucleus and I'd like to add to it instead of adding 35 year olds.

Here's the thing about Bailey though. If Bailey is to rise in value, it will have to be at the MLB level. However, if he improves at the MLB level, then he should probably be kept. So--you have to decide between picking up something you need now (Dye, for instance) or crossing your fingers and hoping he puts it together at the MLB level (low likelihood). If he improves, it changes the entire structure of the debate and likely means he is not a trading chip.

That's the kind of trade I've been dreading all off-season

My guess is that Jocketty can get him for less than Bailey. And he'll put up 1.000 OPS in this tin can of a ballpark. And folks here will complain.

    That's my guess.

    Exactly!!

I hope that this deal gets done, but hopefully w/ another pitching prospect than Bailey... Daryl Thompson + should do it, IMO.

Getting a guy who hit 34 HR's and batted .292 w/ a .885 OPS and a OPS +126 is selling low? He also played in 154 games. He's not Matt Holliday, and maybe not Magglio Ordonez but you get a slugging RH hitter without losing Cueto, Bruce, Volquez, and Votto.

All depends on who the other player coming back is. That's sort of a lot of salary to absorb as well. Dye is a good target though.
