    Trade Bait ?

Which Reds minor leaguer's do you think will be dealt next week at the winter meeting? Stubbs, Frazier, Valaika, etc.... There is plenty of rumors out there like this one.

Dye deal to Cincinnati on hold
Rumor had it the White Sox were shipping Jermaine Dye and his 137 homers in the last four years to Cincinnati in exchange for perhaps a backup catcher for A.J. Pierzynski as well as one of the Reds' surplus arms (Homer Bailey? Josh Roenicke? Matt Maloney?). But now it appears there is some financial reason the deal is being held up. Dye is supposed to make $11.5 million in 2009 and could be bought out for $1 million in 2010 if he proves to be a bust for the Reds. (Chicago Tribune)

The big names I think the Reds will be dangling will be Bailey and Francisco. Roenicke will probably be asked after, perhaps Fischer, too. The financial reason may not be all about the salary but the mutual option for 2010 - Dye may want that bought out. Just my guess. Then again, Walt may be selling Homer dear and expecting the Sox to pay part of Dye's salary to get Bailey included in a deal.

Really, next week should be active and exciting. And the trades that get done will likely bring a lot of FA signings in its wake (the economy turning things around a bit? Usually the major FAs fall before any major trades start working out). Who the Reds deal in the minors and off the 40 man will have a whole lot to do with who they'll be pursuing.

There are so many rumors, though, you have to wait but I'd say Walt will part with any prospect to make a deal work if the target improves the 2009 Reds. His history doesn't really say wait a long time and his boss is impatient. Doesn't mean he'll give them away but I don't think any are sacred cows either.

Except if the rumors are true about us not being on his restricted list he does have any leverage. My guess is Walt is trying to get them to knock off 2-3 million w/o losing Bailey. Which they are balking at.

But I see these guys on the block to some extent.

    Stubbs
    Bailey
    Francisco
    Roenicke
And anyone not on the 40 who is likely to get selected during the rule 5.

    Re: Trade Bait ?

Dye can opt out of his contract for 2010 and that may be the holdup. The Reds may not want to pay the price to acquire him for a single season. Maybe they prefer to own the sole option whether or not he comes back - then he's locked in for 2010 if he has a big season and can be cut loose if he doesn't. With that option he has the leverage to only commit to one year and losing Bailey plus other prospects may not be palatable for a single season of Dye. I think it's a very good chance he's a Red come January whatever the holdup is.

If the deal for Dye can't be worked out then I expect the Reds to look a lot harder at Rivera and other free agents.

Then again, the financial angle may have been a delaying tactic to see if they were in on Furcal or not in which case Dye's salary became a bigger issue.
