Braves In Serious Talks For Javier Vazquez

    MLBTradeRumors.com

According to Ken Rosenthal, the Braves are in serious discussions with the White Sox for starter Javier Vazquez. The White Sox could receive as many as three players, with Jo-Jo Reyes and Brent Lillibridge among the names discussed. Vazquez is set to earn $11.5MM in each of the 2009 and 2010 seasons. Acquiring him would definitely take some pressure off the Braves, who aim to add two quality starters to put in front of Jair Jurrjens.

ESPN's Peter Gammons says Vazquez is flying to Atlanta tomorrow for a physical; the deal will be finalized then. The White Sox will send Vazquez and lefty Boone Logan to the Braves for Reyes, Lillibridge, and another prospect.

    The latest update:
Rosenthal says an announcement could come Wednesday or Thursday. He says Lillibridge is in the deal along with a young starter, but it's not Reyes. Additionally, highly regarded catcher Tyler Flowers might be the third prospect (which would improve the trade quite a bit for the Sox). Baseball Prospectus' Kevin Goldstein says Flowers profiles as an offense-first catcher, but there are questions about his ability to stay behind the plate.

Tyler Flowers destroyed the AFL and is beginning to look like Jarrod Saltalamacchia 2.0 -- in a good way.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

Would you have traded Arroyo for that package? I don't think I would have.

If Tyler Flowers is in the deal, then maybe. If he's not, then nope.

According to Peter Gammons it is a 5 player deal

A baseball source told ESPN's Peter Gammons that the deal will include four other players, including reliever Boone Logan, who would also go from the White Sox to the Braves.

Among the players expected to go from Atlanta to the Chicago organization are Jo-Jo Reyes, Brett Lillibridge and another top prospect.

Even with Flowers I think I pass. The Reds would be trading Arroyo for not one surefire starter. I'm not big on Lillibridge, especially if BP isn't moving to SS.

Re: Braves In Serious Talks For Javier Vazquez

The whitesox are not really in a need for a SS. So they probably didn't ask for Yunel Escobar. I would of traded Arroyo and Turner to the Braves for Escobar and Reyes.

I love how the Braves are trading away their prospects and they really don't have much of a shot to compete.

O'Brien believes Chicago's return to be Flowers, Lillibridge, third baseman Jon Gilmore, and pitcher Santos Rodriguez.

I would too. But that is quite different than the return mentioned.

Looks like we can get those silly ideas of "we're gonna get Dye AND Vazquez from the White Sox" out of our heads...
