    Carolina

What changes will be made for the team in Carolina, any changes that anyone knows of? Anyone have an idea what roster may look like there-obviously lot up in air, but general idea......

    Re: Carolina

Here's who I'm expecting to see in Carolina, but I think a lot will happen between now and then:
C Eddy Rodriguez (AA catcher by default)
1B Yonder Alonso (could start in Sarasota)
2B Chris Valaika (will he stick at shortstop?)
3B Juan Francisco (will he move to left field?)
SS Todd Frazier (no one knows his long term position)
LF Carson Kainer (left fielder by default)
    CF Chris Heisey
RF Sean Henry (deserves to be in AAA)

C Chris Denove (AA catcher by default)
1B Logan Parker (deserves more play time and will start if Alonso is in Sarasota)
IF Jose Castro (utility infielder with weak bat)
OF Yuber Rodriguez (utility outfielder with weak bat)
UT Justin Tordi (can play anywhere on the diamond)

SP Jordan Smith (earned a promotion to AA last year but struggled; needs to rebound)
SP Travis Wood (very young but very talented)
SP Dallas Buck (has been recovering from arm surgery; may be in Sarasota)
SP Pedro Viola (had an off year but still has Major League potential)
SP Alex Smit (was once a great Twins prospect; can he regain some of his status?)

CL Sean Watson (one of the organization's best bullpen prospects)
RP Ramon Geronimo (performs well wherever he pitches)
    RP Lee Tabor (decent left-hander)
RP Terrell Young (continues to improve but still has some command issues)
RP Phil Valiquette (left-hander with great stuff but terrible results)
RP Derrik Lutz (performed well before 2008)
RP Logan Ondrusek (mopup pitcher who can be used as emergency starter)
RP Camilo Vazquez (mopup pitcher who can be used as emergency starter)
SP Scott Carroll (suspension from illegal substance)

If both Valaika and Frazier are starting in Carolina, I expect Valaika to be manning shortstop.

Most definately. Frazier has shown to all he is not SS material. I get the impression the Reds very much so, want Valaika to become their decent SS with a good bat real soon. They will give him every opportunity to be just that. If all goes well, I see him in Louisville before the season is far along, if he doesn't start there.

    Re: Carolina

Justin Tordi should be starting at SS somewhere

The whole idea of putting him at catcher was stupid

I almost wish he wasn't a Red just so he could get some consistent playing time

Justin Tordi has a career line of .207/.287/.266 - .553 OPS and he turns 25 in April. Please explain why he should play more.
    I miss Adam Dunn.

Between Francisco, Frazier, and Valaika, I expect a lot of position-switching. I just figured that Frazier would play shortstop on the days that Valaika is at second. You're right, though. Maybe this would be better:

    C Rodriguez
    1B Alonso
    2B Castro
    3B Frazier
    SS Valaika
    LF Francisco
    CF Heisey
    RF Henry

In this event, the Reds would probably look to sign a minor league free agent or ask Luis Bolivar to stay in Carolina a while.

He doesn't get enough playing time to get himself going

And for those that have played the game before they know it's hard to get into a groove if you aren't playing everyday.

The reason he doesn't get much playing time is because the Reds don't view him as much of a prospect. The Reds probably view him as an organizational filler who may one day retire and become a coach in the organization.

    Re: Carolina

They kinda screwed him by putting him at catcher

He has better range and better hands at SS than Chris Valaika does

And his bat is much, much worse. He's got a career .553 OPS and has never made it out of High-A.

    Re: Carolina

I envision that Valakia sticks at short and Frazier makes the switch to second. I believe on here months ago there was an interview with Terry Reynolds confirming he saw Todd as being on the right side of the infield. He could be the guy they are grooming to replace Phillips in 2010/11.

    2011:

    1b Yonder
    2b Frazier
    3b Francisco
    ss Valakia
    lf Votto
    cf Stubbs
    rf Bruce
    C ?

    ut Castillo
    ut Rosales
    of Heisley

That argument goes both ways. You can say he doesn't perform well due to a lack of playing time, but you could also say he doesn't deserve playing time due to his lack of performing. The Reds have a long list of prospects who weren't highly thought of when they were drafted but earned more playing time because they showed some glimmer of promise in limited action. This was Tordi's fourth year in the organization, and he should consider himself lucky that the Reds liked him enough to let him advance beyond rookie ball, despite doing nothing to earn a promotion other than having seniority. His ability to play catcher didn't screw him over--it's what has gotten him so many at-bats in the first place.

Tordi caught one game with Dayton in 2007

He has been stuck behind Paul Janish and Chris Valaika

Of course they aren't going to play him with "names" like that in front of him

In 2006, he didn't play shortstop because of Valaika, but he got most of the playing time at catcher for Billings even though he was significantly out-performed by Anthony Esquer.

In 2007, he took some time away from Todd Frazier as the shortstop at Billings--if that isn't being given a chance, I don't know what is. Otherwise, he was out-performed and "blocked" by such immense talents that include Mike DeJesus, Eddy Rodriguez, Mike Griffin, and Eric Eymann. That is, until Zack Cozart and Todd Frazier arrived.

In 2008, it was more of the same--being out-performed and "blocked" by actual prospects that range from Craig Tatum to Juan Francisco to Chris Valaika.

Wait, I get it know . . . you're baiting me, right? Good job.
