Bowden wasn't even in the Reds organization when Young was drafted. At this point he's just doing it because he can.

He's got a decent arm but I don't think anyone expected him to get drafted, especially #1 overall. I think Bowden just views this as a way of getting back at the Reds. No big loss, the Reds probably have seven or eight better relief prospects than Young.

Patton, 24, and Johnston, 24, both played at high Class A Modesto this year. Patton has a power arm and had 87 strikeouts in 73 2/3 innings, while Johnston, who had 24 saves, is a strike-thrower with a good sinker. Neither would appear to be ready to pitch in the big leagues next season.

Yea, he was an O' Brien pick.

Well, I figured they'd add a leftyfor the pen and bring in a couple of other relief arms from the outside for competition. Guess this is one of those

I'm wondering if Jocketty thinks a deal can be worked out to keep in our system. That's purely conjecture on my part.

    Re: Rule Five

Leatherpants is building his perfect ex-Red team by selecting right-hander Terrell Young with the first pick in the Rule 5 draft. Young was 1-2 with a 2.41 ERA for Class A Sarasota last season, where he pitched out of the bullpen. He certainly has a big arm and has done well since moving to the pen.

Also, the Reds selected RHP Dave Patton of the Rockies, but he will be traded to the Cubs.

    Returning the Josh Hamilton favor?

It will be interesting to see if it nets the Reds anything of value for the service.

It will be interesting to see if we do anything in the minor league phases of the draft. I can't remember what we've done there the last few years.
