Ricky Weeks out for season for Brewers

    With a wrist tear:

    ESPN article.

That has to hurt them a bit.

Bummer for Weeks, who was having his best season, but the Brewers should be able to weather the injury. Bill Hall could play 2B and top prospect Mat Gamel could play 3B. Or Alcides Escobar could come up and firm up the defense.

Escobar has a .315 obp in AAA. Mat Gamel is apparantly one of the worst 3B imaginable. Bill Hall has 19 errors in 100 career games at 2B.

Brew Crew could be in some major trouble. Weeks was having a career year.

Mat Gamel made a total of 115 errors at 3B over the last 3 years in the minors.

    That is no typo. 115.

Weeks never could field. Hall was able to hold down a SS job back in 2006. He can probably replace Weeks in the field without much of a noticeable drop. Gamel would be an adventure in the field, but he'd be banging.

And Escobar is on hand if they decide they'd rather have defense.

Tony Perez made 92 in 3 years in MLB

None of those options is a good one, IMO.

Gamel already has an error in the Majors after tonight's game. Of course, he also has a Home Run as well.

One gets you the same or more offense with basically the same goofy defense (though, to be fair, the Brewers sport a lofty DER at the moment and the ball seems to be finding Weeks in particular).

    The other bolsters your defense.

It's not like Rickie Weeks is some dynamite two-way player. He was having a nice season, but there's every reason to think Rickie Weeks wouldn't have been a good option to replace Rickie Weeks for the rest of the season.

My take is what Gamel brings in terms of LH-RH balance in the lineup will outweigh his kooky defense, and I suspect what you'll see is him at 3B and Hall at 2B.

The Brewers aren't likely to give us another usable fantasy player in the aftermath, not from a mixed-league tack anyway. Lefty Craig Counsell(notes) and righty Casey McGehee(notes) will probably share the second-base gig for a while – I'm assuming Ken Macha doesn't want to go the Bill Hall(notes) route at second – and while the organization plans to give hotshot shortstop Alcides Escobar some time at second base at Triple-A Nashville, a call-up isn't imminent on that front.
