That was obviously a huge turning point in the game, but contrary to what many (not saying you, Matt) will have you believe, it wasn't on the last, fateful and deciding 49ers drive.

I have to admit that Assante's play is tougher than I remember.

Seeing footage of that game still makes me sick at my stomach, even twenty years later. I will contend the rest of my days that the Cincinnati Bengals were the best team in the National Football League in 1988.

Didn't the niners get a TD on the next play?

I'm not sure the last drive matters as much if they are down by an additional 7 points

Yes, it was definitely a big play in the game, as I originally mentioned - all I'm saying is that many incorrectly recall it being on the final drive of the game (right before Montana to Taylor).

    YEP.

San Francisco (:34 left in 3rd Quarter)
    * Johnson kick to SF 2, Taylor 13 return.
    (1) SF 15 110 Montana 31 pass to Rice left (Wilcots).
    END OF THIRD QUARTER:
    Cincinnati 13, San Francisco 6
    FOURTH QUARTER
    (2) SF 46 110 Montana 40 pass to Craig deep right (Billups).
    (3) C 14 110 Montana pass to Taylor almost intercepted (Billups), incomplete.
    (4) C 14 210 Montana 14 pass to Rice left, touchdown (14:03). Cofer kicked extra point.
San Francisco scoring drive: 85 yards, 4 plays, 1:31.
    Cincinnati 13, San Francisco 13

As much as I like to think I recall Bengals and Reds history precisely, I was among those who thought that until you pointed out otherwise today.

    Re: January 22, 1989...

Ahh. I always remembered it as a play that happened on an earlier drive; I probably haven't ever noticed that people had Fisked it.
