My golden retriever died a few years back of the same sort of Lymphoma that took Bill Simmons' dog. I could only skim the article. He went through chemo for about a year and a half. Most of the time you wouldn't have known he was ill.

Re: Bill Simmons Eulogizes His Dog

We lost our first dog, a long-haired German Sheppard named Charlie, to some unknown cancer when he was 9. It was painful watching him lose it. When he was younger, he was a frisbee catching machine who couldn't be overthrown. At age 7 or so, he rarely broke in that full sprint anymore, a mere frisbee retriever. At 8 he sometimes just stand there and watch, waiting for me to go pick it up. As he neared 9, he could barely get himself up to go eat and drink and just looked sad all the time. The event of the day was shifting from the hall by the family room to the base of the stairs when every everybody went to bed. We didn't realize he was getting sick and not just old and creaky until it was too late.

I was certainly sad when we put him down, but I felt like I was doing him a service. He definitely went before he should have. Now my parents have a 2 year old Golden Lab. I've never seen a big dog so energetic and full of life.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

I know of what you speak. My wife and I adopted a puppy from what we thought was puppy rescue but later found out was quite the opposite.

We got her on a Saturday night and named her Angel. By Wednesday we had to have her put to sleep.

We contacted the "puppy rescue" to alert them that she had parvo because other dogs had been exposed. They got defensive and were more worried about being paid. Angel was supposedly checked by a doctor while at the rescue. Our doctors were upset that a dog this sick was available for adoption.

We were also advised not get another dog for a year because of possible contamination. We never did. We got a cat about a year later from a reputable animal rescue.
