If it's just based on last year's stats one of them would be wise to take Nate McLouth...
"On-base percentage is great if you can score runs and do something with that on-base percentage," Baker said. "Clogging up the bases isn't that great to me."

Making me wonder how it incorporates defense.

Ha, yeah. Which honestly makes me wonder what the point of this exercise was...

To drum up more traffic for espn.com, and potentially get more people to join insider. But, I'm bored enough to play along, as long as they don't make me join insider to find out who wins.

Re: ESPN's Battle of the Budgets

Day 4 is up... I guess Jay is not going to be drafted. I was at least hoping Burton would go.

    ROUND 16
    61. Jayson Stark selects Joey Devine (P, Oakland A's, $429,000)
Steve Phillips: Bummer. He was on my board in the next several picks.
    62. Steve Phillips selects Matt Kemp (OF, Los Angeles Dodgers, $466,900)
Jayson Stark: About time you stayed in budget, Steve!
    63. Buster Olney selects John Baker (C, Florida Marlins, $400,000)
    64. Rob Neyer selects Jack Cust (OF, Oakland A's, $400,000)

    ROUND 17
    65. Rob Neyer selects Conor Jackson (1B/OF, Arizona Diamondbacks, $3,050,000)
    66. Buster Olney selects Denard Span (OF, Minnesota Twins, $448,500)
Steve Phillips: I wanted Span, too, but Kemp fit with Ellsbury better.
    67. Steve Phillips selects Chris Iannetta (C, Colorado Rockies, $455,500)
Steve Phillips: Headed into church. Be back in an hour. Gotta pray over my next selection.
    68. Jayson Stark selects Alexei Ramirez (2B, Chicago White Sox, $1,100,000)

    ROUND 18
    69. Jayson Stark selects Ben Zobrist (SS, Tampa Bay Rays, $435,380)
    70. Steve Phillips selects Hideki Okajima (P, Boston Red Sox, $1,750,000)
    71. Buster Olney selects Shane Victorino (OF, Philadelphia Phillies, $3,125,000)
Jayson Stark: Your team just captured the Hawaiian vote!

Buster Olney: His mom gave me macadamia nuts. How could I pass?

Jayson Stark: Boy, are you easy. You're a nutcase!

Rob Neyer: Sorry for the wait, but finally
    72. Rob Neyer selects Mike Napoli (C, Los Angeles Angels, $2,000,000)

    ROUND 19
    73. Rob Neyer selects Mitch Stetter (P, Milwaukee Brewers, $445,000)
    74. Buster Olney selects Ryan Ludwick (OF, St. Louis Cardinals, $3,575,000)
    75. Steve Phillips selects Miguel Montero (C, Arizona Diamondbacks, $460,575)
Jayson Stark: Here it comes, the all-phenom daily double
    76. Jayson Stark selects David Price (P, Tampa Bay Rays, $750,000)

    ROUND 20
    77. Jayson Stark selects Justin Upton (OF, Arizona Diamondbacks, $432,300)
    78. Steve Phillips selects Ryan Theriot (SS, Chicago Cubs, $492,200)
    79. Buster Olney selects Asdrubal Cabrera (2B, Cleveland Indians, $432,630)
    80. Rob Neyer selects Chris Davis (1B, Texas Rangers, $400,000)
Rob Neyer: Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

    Jayson Stark: He's a steal.

Re: ESPN's Battle of the Budgets

It's important to remember these guys aren't putting together a real baseball team, it's a Diamond Mind team, which means the players have a pre-determined set of abilities based on last year's statistics. I don't know the Diamond Mind player ratings, but I can tell you in Strat he's got a fairly poor card.

If this were Strat, Buster Olney is housing everyone else. In fact, I'm getting the distinct impression he's the only one who studied the Diamond Mind player counts. Maybe Neyer did, but he's building a team for a season rather than a short series.

Look, somebody took Ben Zobrist. I can't even guess what that one's about.

    Team Olney defeats the Yankees.

Then it got a little weird. Joba Chamberlain, who pitched in relief in Game 1 for the Yankees, started against them in Game 4 (yes, he's on Team Olney, too.
