Re: Baker: Phillips will hit clean up

I was just reading the Gomes thread and started thinking that with all our big-splits hitters (Phillips, Keppinger, EE, Dickerson, etc.), a crafty manager might actually be able put together some respectably productive line-ups.

Then I read this and threw my hands up.

I'm mean, really, I just don't get it with Dusty. This is so simple a 5-year old could get it. Phillips doesn't hit RHP. Why in god's name would anybody bat him cleanup against them? This is beyond stupid. Seriously, we have no chance with this guy at the helm. None.

No one wears pants in the clubhouse. That's why we're not allowed in there. There's a coat check guy at the entrance, only he's not a coat check guy. He's a pants check guy.

Fay told me. He said not to tell anyone else, but what's he ever done for me? I'm not sure what he saw in my character that made him think I could be trusted with inside information.

So, yeah, Raisor could do it. (He's won awards. Lots of them.)

I'm going to go ahead an officially announce myself as a candidate to replace The Dust if/when the position becomes open.

I'm also declaring myself eligable for the NFL, NHL, NBA, and MLB drafts.

Are you going to wear batting gloves?

I know we make fun of Dusty for wearing them, but I think I'd wear them. Non-stop. In bed, in the shower, driving the car, watching TV, whatever. I'd wear them. Hey, free batting gloves, you know?

It's the not wearing pants everywhere else that would cause the problems.
School's out. What did you expect?

What did people expect? Everyone is acting like they didn't expect this to be the case but we all knew better. He's not prototypical and not even the most ideal guy the Reds have, at least not at this juncture. He can be a solid option if he improves his game and although it's a longshot it's not completely impossible. I don't think it's a big stretch to think he can out OPS EE and probably Bruce as well. Yeah it's not perfect but little is with this team because Dusty is running it.

Why would anyone throw strikes to Phillips if he always swings at pitches out of the strike zone?

Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth were both LH hitters and had pretty good careers hitting 3 & 4 in the same lineup.

Because very few teams have a real ROOGY. Every LH reliever isn't a LOOGY, but more teams have a real one. If almost every team had a Chad Bradford or a Cla Meredith in their pen, you'd be more likely to worry about splitting up RHHs.

you ever wonder why Dusty's winning percentage went way down when his son got banned from the dugout?

Re: Baker: Phillips will hit clean up

The most surprising part of this thread is that people are still acting shocked and bewildered. This was a mortal lock to happen the day he was hired. This isn't his fault...it is the FO's fault for hiring him and not controlling him.

My old adage applies...this was like hiring a convicted thief to be your cashier, not putting any heightened oversight over his/her activities and then acting as if you are stunned when he/she pilfers $500 a week from you. While the fault lies with the thief, management could have prevented it from happening by not putting the business in that situation.

Thank you to Wayne for bestowing Dusty upon us.

That seems like a pretty big stretch to me. His OBP really hurts him in that regard. He'd pretty much have to hit .300 to get into the same neighborhood because it seems unlikely he'll develop the plate discipline.

I don't see shock and bewilderment from the posters in this thread. I see frustration and maybe some anger. I'm pretty sure this news didn't come as a shock to anyone. I know I wasn't surprised at all.

Just like I won't be surprised to see a Jones/Gomes platoon in LF to start the year.
