    Pudge to the 'Stros

Source: Rodriguez, Astros agreeComment Email Print Share ESPN.com news services
Catcher Ivan Rodriguez has agree to a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the Houston Astros, a source told ESPN's Steve Phillips on Monday.

    Rodriguez

Rodriguez can make an additional $1.5 million in performances bonuses.

At the World Baseball Classic this spring, Rodriguez, a 14-time major league All-Star, is hitting .600 (9-for-15) in four games for Puerto Rico.

Rodriguez hit .276 with seven homers and 35 RBIs in 115 games with the Detroit Tigers and New York Yankees last year. He is the only player in baseball history with at least 13 Gold Gloves and a career .300 average or better.

He has three more Gold Gloves, earning one as recently as 2007, giving him three more than Johnny Bench and almost double the total by Bob Boone, who is third on the list. Among position players, only Hall of Fame third baseman Brooks Robinson has more Gold Glove awards.

Rodriguez has caught 2,173 games, trailing only Carlton Fisk (2,226) and Boone (2,225) in terms of longevity behind the plate.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

He wouldn't have been happy with the Reds, so don't go there. The Reds got their guy and Hanigan continues to be proving himself as a solid backup or starter if we need him.

I don't like any move that makes the Astros better, and even though Pudge is becoming a dinosaur, it does make them better. Boo.

He has precious little left in the tank. He looked done as a Yankee.

regardless of the pudge signing, their farm system still stinks. they have a dim future.

Pudge has been hitting pretty well in the WBC I believe. Hope he doesnt do the same in Houston. What does this mean about their faith in the young Towles?

I'm not sure what you mean by don't go there....Never said I wished the Reds would have signed him, BUT I'm not convinced that either RH is the answer.

I'll take my chances with RH over a quickly aging Pudge. It seems that catchers take a sharp downturn when age begins to show. OFers, 1Bmen, even 3Bmen can keep it going when they hit the age slope, but most catchers can't. RH can still hit and he is not a liability defensively.

I don't think this makes them better, over all. I think this could cause problems as the season goes on. Who gets playing time - young guy with potential upside or aging vet who will never want out of the line-up?

It will be fun to watch.

x2 There's no way we could have predicted he would've come so cheaply. Too late now to look back. It's not a bad fit at all but...

In other catcher news, I'm still pretty worried about RH considering Venezuela keeps tearing through the WBC. How is he going to have time to get to know his guys in the Reds rotation? Anyone think Hanigan will start the year?

Unless Pudge is somehow solving Houston's pathetic starting pitching issues, I'm not concerned.

Hanigan will probably see more time initially if this keeps up.

Back to Pudge, I like this move (especially for the 'stros).

I am actually glad about this, gives Hanigan more time to adjust and take the spot. I just think RH is our weakest link, by far, on this team, and that the job will be Han's full time by the end of the year anyway.

I guess that means Juan Carlos Sulbaran is going to make the big-league club as a Pudge specialist.
