    And another computer help question

I have a pretty new computer HP running Vista. Yesterday I restarted, and it wouldn't boot. I had a black screen and a message saying it would'nt start, or boot- I forget exactly what it said. Through system recovery, I was able to create backup discs- it took 7 DVDs. I reformated, and am no using this PC. What would these CDs be? I had some music on the HD. Is it lost, or is there a way I can get it from hese discs? I ran all 7, and now have a shortcut on my desktoy, but can't seem to figure out what it is, or what to do with it. Anyone have anny advice? None of the files are critical, but there is some music I'd like to get back.
I've been to dinner at Jimmy Buffet's house, and I've eaten it at a homeless shelter. And there's great joy and harrowing terror to be found in both places.

Re: And another computer help question

When you say that you "ran" the 7 Dvd's, what did you exactly do? There is a specific way to restore backup files in Vista. Look at this link:

    http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/10...kup-files.html

I'm not that familiar with Vista because every machine that I've had with it, I've downgraded it back to XP. I'm sure I may have to eventually use it, but maybe not with "Windows 7" coming out of the chute. (the poop chute that is )

Anyway, check out the link. It outlines how to use the Backup and Restore center to restore back up files. The only question is if you can point the restore function to your actual Dvds or if you have to load an image on the computer to get it to work.

Another possibilily: check to see if, when you created the disks, Vista made one of them a bootable recovery disk. I know that it may depend on the manufacturer as to how it may work. It's at least worth a shot, if you can't get the backup and restore center to work.

    Good luck.

I thought I'd bump this up. Now I'm having a problem with my monitor speakers. I have an HP w1907 monitor with built in speakers. This morning I was getting an error saying a cable wasn't connected and as I disconnected the plug and the sound cable, I realized that my VGA cable had come disconnected. I tightened it and also reconnected the other two cables (power and sound), plus I placed the sound chord into my computer's "sound out" plug. Now my sound won't work. I've checked every connection on the sound and I'm baffled. Any ideas?

I'd first go into the sound configuration utility. A lot of systems will have an icon you can click on in the systray. Check the speaker config. and such. Also double check the connections. I'm sure there are multiple mini-jack ports on the computer, so make sure you have the right one. Also, make sure there isn't a separate power cord for the speakers. I'd be surprised if the VGA cable has anything to do with the sound problem - they are independent.

If you don't have any luck there, you may try to re-install the sound driver. Check for one online and get the most current one.

Other than that, if you were plugging and unplugging with the computer on, you might have zapped the sound with a static charge or something. I think that's unlikely, though.

I finally found the link for the blog post you referenced

But I'm not sure what it supposed to do? Is it an alternative audio driver?

Man, that's helpful as all get out.

I like Macs also, but please dismount your Apple high horse and realize that they have issues sometimes just like PC's do.

    Thank you.

Mac vs PC fights are so 1996, IMO applications are where the action is.

    I absolutely agree.

The main issue with PC's is the software (mostly OS), not the technology.

Alternate OS' are far more stable, less bloated, more secure, etc. They are just not as widespread and under-utilized by software companies and peripheral manufacturers.

But, I know you already know that. I remember that you have a laptop w/ an Ubuntu/ Linux OS.

Oh, yeah, I started this thread, didn't I? I wasn't sure what to do with those 7 DVDs or what was really on them. My PC was so new, I just decided to forget about them. I downloaded again a couple of shows that I had lost, so I I don't have know that I remember are A video of a show I had burned to DVD anyway and some freeware for converting video files so I could burn that I can go get when and if I need it again. Hope it doesn't happen again.
