Branch Rickey was a fan of the Reds, does that count for anything?

You know, he is a pre-1947 inductee but for the life of me I can't understand why he was elected except for publicity.

He was a pioneer. Broke the color barrier and signed Jackie. Developed the framework for the minor leagues. Helped evolve sabermetrics. That's just off the top of the head. Ahead of his time in pretty much every way. But yes, it does make you question on what factors they selected this list. He didn't really have an illustrious college baseball career.

Was he an exceptional player or something else in college? Don't know too much about his career in college, I guess I could wikipedia it though.
