    Minors Opening Day Games 4/9/09

Homer Bailey to the bump for L'ville.

Dallas Buck on the mound for Carolina.

Matt Klinker to the mound for Sarasota.

Dayton opens as well but don't see from the website who is scheduled to toe the rubber for them.

    All these games are tonight.

Looking forward to following the progression of the kids again on this forum.

Thanks. I am really pumped about the progression of a number of prospects. While it is not as top-heavy as it was, I think the system is deeper than it has been in recent memory.

    D. Mesorasco showed enough friskiness in camp this spring that I am hoping we will see a solid year from him at Sarasota. If he can OPS around .750 there and progress his skills behind the plate, that would be big for the organization.

And the entire Carolina offense is going to be a delight to follow.

And for Dayton, when Sulbaran and Lotzker show up, that will add to the fun.

Not to mention if Yorman and Duran make their short season debuts.

So much to look forward to across the entire system.

After Arroyo gets knocked around today, I wouldn't be surprised to see Homer get a call up.

    CINCINNATI REDS

TRIPLE-A LOUISVILLE: If the Reds need to call up a starting pitcher, they have plenty of options in Triple-A. RHP Homer Bailey had an outstanding spring, while RHP Ramon Ramirez pitched well in a late-season stint with the big league club last year.

DOUBLE-A CAROLINA: SS Zach Cozart opened last year in low Class A because of a logjam at the position, so the Reds made up for that this season by promoting him to Double-A. The position has opened up because Todd Frazier has moved from shortstop to left field, where he’ll play every day for the Mudcats, the Reds’ new affiliate.

HIGH CLASS A SARASOTA: The Reds’ last two first-round picks, C Devin Mesoraco and 1B Yonder Alonso, both start in Sarasota, although Alonso may hit his way to Double-A before too long. RHP Zach Stewart is another prospect to watch, as his stuff may allow him to move quickly in a relief role.

LOW CLASS A DAYTON: The Dragons continue their streak of sellouts, but to open the season they won’t have a single member of the Reds’ top 30 prospects. LHP Matt Fairel and OF Byron Wiley are two of the players to watch.

EXTENDED SPRING/NOTABLE INJURIES: OF Juan Duran wasn’t going to make a full-season roster anyway, but he’s out with a minor knee injury. RHP Carlos Sulbaran opens on the Dayton disabled list as he recovers from a blister. RHP Kyle Lotzkar is also expected to head to Dayton once he recovers from a tired arm.

I think Carolina's offense is going to be bombs away this year. I'm really looking forward to seeing them this season.

I'm excited to follow the progress of Buck this season. Like what I've read of him during the offseason, and am hoping for a full return to health. If he gets back to where he was earlier in his college career, the Reds just might contain the strongest core of "young" pitching in their system/big league club in all of baseball. Sharp contrast to when they used to have the best young core of outfielders, but not enough room to play them all. At least we know they can use 12 strong young arms at any 1 point in the majors, and are much easier to trade away for that extra outfielder.

    Big start for Sarasota.

Kahaulelio doubled, Reed struckout, Alonso walked, Buchholz doubled in two runs, Soto singled in a run, and Mesoraco and Reed made the final two outs.

3-0 Sarasota after a 1/2 inning. This was against Brad Holt, one of the Mets top prospects.

Homer Bailey is facing the Indians prospect-laden lineup.

He gets a ground out, pop out, and strikeout in the first inning.

For Louisville in the bottom half of the inning:
Hopper: Attempted a bunt single, out at 1st.
    Stubbs: groundout to third
    Valaika: groundout to third

    0-0 After one inning

Bad start to the second inning for Homer. Gave up a 1-2 double to LaPorta followed by a 2-run homer to Aubrey also on a 1-2 pitch.
