    Tuesday 5/5/09 minor league updates

    Louisville - 7:05 - LHP Adam Pettyjohn

    Carolina - 7:15 - RHP Matt Klinker

    Sarasota - 7:00 - RHP Luis Montano

    Dayton - 7:00 - RHP Oscar Castro

I didn't know Klinker had been promoted. He's probably taking the spot of Dallas Buck, who left his last start early with an injury. I haven't heard anything about the injury so it's probably nothing too serious.

THE VIRTUOSO: LHP Pedro Viola (Louisville) last night vs. Rochester pitched a scoreless inning of relief (2h, 1bb)...since allowing a run in his first appearance of the season on 4/14 vs Toledo (solo HR), he’s pitched 8.1 scoreless innings.

HOOK, LINE AND KLINKER: RHP Matt Klinker yesterday was promoted from Class-A Sarasota to Double-A Carolina and will start tonight for the Mudcats vs Mobile...Klinker, 24, is a graduate of Lakota West High School and pitched collegiately at Furman University...in 5 starts this season for Sarasota, he allowed 16 runs in 26.2 innings (5bb, 23k).

YONDER THE RESPONDER: 1b Yonder Alonso (Sarasota) last night vs. Ft. Myers went 2-for-4 with a double, RBI and a run scored...he’s currently riding an 8-game hitting streak (9-30, .300, 2hr, 11rbi) that has lifted his batting average 27 points and his OPS (on-base pct. + slugging pct.) 52 points...Alonso’s 26 RBI lead the Florida State League.

SWEET 600: Louisville’s Rick Sweet tonight will manage his 600th game for the Bats...with a 316-283 career record for Louisville, he’s the franchise’s all-time winningest manager...his 1,365 career wins rank 5th among all active minor league skippers.

Nice to see Sutton in the lineup. This will be his Reds organizational debut.

Justin Reed is back with Sarasota. He's leading off and playing CF.

Oops, just noticed he returned last night.

Did he owe someone money in Billings?

Sutton fields two balls in the first. Routine stuff.

Pettyjohn pitched batting practice in the first. Bats down 3-0.

To be fair, Pettyjohn was hurt by Bankston double pumping a throw to 2nd on a pick-off. This is the 3rd time Bankston's double pumps have hurt us this year.

Brian Peterson is off the Bats roster. No surprise.

Hopper gets another hit to lead off but is stranded.

    Sutton - pop up
    Bankston - K
    Barker - K

Hopper is batting .405 in his last 10 games, including tonight.

Bolivar with a throwing error in the 2nd. Bats lead the league in errors.

Pettyjohn holds them scoreless in the 2nd. Tatum actually threw out a runner trying to steal 2nd.

Still 3-0 going to the bottom of the 3rd.

Drew Stubbs can play some serious CF.

Bats get nothing in the 3rd. Rochester pitcher Reid Santos has retired 9 in a row since Hopper's lead off single. 3 Ks. He came into the game with an ERA of 7.98.

I'm no fan of Norris Hopper's but it's hard for me to see why he'd be less useful on the Reds roster than McD or JHJ.

I would add Dickerson to that list. But I might not agree about McDonald.
