The Kind Of Stuff I Think About (and it worries me)...

I believe that if you listed every major league player in history alphabetically, tonight's starting pitchers would be adjacent to each other. I wonder if that's ever happened before...

Originally I thought about Joe and Phil Niekro, but nowadays Lance splits them.

BTW, the pitcher right before Volquez alphabetically seems to be Bill Voiselle, who was the only major league player to wear his hometown name on his uniform (he was from Ninety-Six, North Carolina).

You have unusual things to think about, Chico.

But, according to Baseball Reference, there were 4 other guys named Volquez who played in the bigs: two guys named Angel, Julio and Rafael. Wouldn't they mess up your alpha list?

By the way, where is that list of all major-leaguers you are talking about? Or are we just talking about pitchers?

You are not alone, I think about equally odd stuff, including categorizing pitchers who threw altered pitches that were not spitballs... helps ya get to sleep.

Maybe we should try to come up with non-fraternal candidates.

Okay. Odalis Perez and Oliver Perez?

I'd have to think they started against each other at one time in their NL careers.

When pitcher Gabe White made his Major League debut for the Expos in 1994, he became only the second player in Major League history with the first name "Gabe". (The first was Gabe Gabler, who played only three games with the Cubs in 1958.) Since White, five more "Gabes" have appeared in Major League games, ushering in the "Gabe Era" in Major League Baseball. Three of them made their debut in 1998 alone (Alvarez, Gonzales, Kapler), another in 1999 (Molina), and one in 2004 (Gross).

Now we're into our fifth year with no new Gabes! Is the Gabe Era over?

To top it off, I seem to recall speculation on this very site a few years ago about the Reds trading Gabe White for Gabe Kapler, which would have obviously made the only time in Major League history that two Gabes were traded for each other.

I looked this stuff up about five years ago and have been hanging onto it, just waiting for the right time to share it.

I remember Kurt Gouveia from the NFL because he was the only player in history to have all 5 vowels in his last name. Anyone know if this has happened in MLB?
