It has been 11 years since a Reds position player has pitched

Last time was June 1, 2008 by Lenny Harris.

Rob Butcher and Marty mentioned this during last nights game.

    I'm guessing you meant 1998.

I know he gave up 5 runs, but I would've never guessed out of all the current Reds that Janish would be a guy that could hit low 90s with the heat. I never knew that he dabbled as a closer in college. Not that I want to see it again, but I'd be interested to see what other Reds have hidden talents on the mound.

The last time I remember it happening was when Concepcion pitched a shutout inning back in the 80's.

I know he will proably never pitch again (and I hope he doesn't) but Janish's pitching debut reminds me of a certain other famous Red. Think about it. Reds down by a lot. Ninth inning, manager brings in a guy nobody expects to pitch. Guy goes out, retires the first two batters. Subsequently gives up 5 runs. The difference, however, is that Paul Janish can only hope to play 15 seasons for the Reds and go on to become the incredibly beloved surrogate radio grandfather to an entire city. Rest In Peace, Joe.
