1k can get a decent vacation, I think you guys are giving up too easy

3 nights at the Inverrary Hotel in Ft. Lauderdale, plus a 1/2 day fishing trip comes up to $558.00

Plane ticket from Cincy to Ft. Lauderdale comes to $449

It goes a little over, but the fishing trip is alot more expensive than most of the activities.

Agreed, but I think it'd be hard to find something right now, and getting there takes a while for a 2-3 day trip.

If you want some relatively inexpensive beach living, North and South Carolina both have a lot of options. And you don't have to do Myrtle Beach, there are many resorts to choose from.

That's mostly in the border towns. The resorts are not. August is not a great month to catch the flu. But I forgot about Hurricane season. I think vacations to Florida, Mexico, the Caribbean are cheaper in August because of the Hurricane threat.

And possibly because it's 400 degrees at that time of year?

That's where my wife and I went for our honeymoon, minus the fishing. Very relaxing. Of course, it also helped the budget in that it was only a four hour drive for us.

If you like mountains, shopping, and various attractions within walking or short driving distance, I'd recommend Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg. I'm not sure where it is on the affordability factor, but prob. better than the tropical destinations mentioned, and traffic can get a little thick depending on events going on. We were just down there last week staying visiting family who live in Sevierville and spent our honeymoon there 11 years ago.

Put-in-Bay on Lake Erie is a good time. Lots of nice beaches, a vineyard, Cedar Point (probably the best theme park in the US, if not the world, for roller coasters) very close. Good young scene, lots of bars and live music at night. Great fish (lake perch there is excellent!)...

    Re: Honeymoon Ideas?

Not such a good location if you want a beach, but there's a ton of stuff to do in Washington DC, and the drive wouldn't be a killer.

Given the state of things, you might be surprised at how cheaply you can fly somewhere this summer. Get the weekly sale fare emails from the airlines. You can catch deals...especially if you're willing to fly out of a major hub like Atlanta, Chicago, or Pittsburgh.

And right on cue, I just got the weekly airfare sale email from Delta.

Cincinnati to NYC for $69 one way? With taxes / fees, that puts RT airfare for 2 at about $325, leaving you $675 for accomodations & other stuff. If you can catch an early flight in the morning, and a late return flight the next day, you'd only need 1 night of a hotel. Pick up some day-of tickets for a Broadway or Off-Broadway show. Take in Central Park. Go up in the Empire State Building. Grab a hot dog for lunch from a street corner vendor or a slice of pizza off pretty much any corner in Manhattan. There's the Met, MoMa, Guggenheim, Natural History, etc. $1,000 total will be a bit of a challenge (and pretty much impossible if you need to cover airfare & 2 nights in a decent hotel). But balancing fun & challenge is the essence of marriage, so it's nothing that either of you two aren't already used to.

My area of expertise is California and the Southwest so I don't really have a lot to tell you.

I think the Canada idea may be good. Pretty easy drive to Niagra Falls and then catch either Toronto, Ottawa or Montreal.

Something in the Carolinas may be good. Hilton Head, Myrtle Beach, Charleston are interesting cities.

I'll echo 15fan's remarks about airfare. It's pretty cheap right now. Southwest is offering $49.00 each way to selected destinations but you have to book early. It sounds like you've got several options of cities to fly out of so that helps.

Once you pick a destination, before you book anything, check www.tripadvisor.com for hotel reviews and check the 'forum' for that city. It'll give you some ideas on the hotels and things to do as well as costs. I don't think much of their restaurant reviews as a whole though.

Another good site is www.flyertalk.com. It's more oriented to business travelers but can give you a lot of good info based upon what people that travel on a constant basis think about things. Huge site but worth the time to look around. Usually has a current thread about travel bargains, special rates, etc.

Oh yeah. I ment to ask; you mentioned a cruise. Have you considered a river cruise on the Ohio/Missippi?

That might be a good deal and could be a bit different. August might be the perfect time of the year to do that.

    Yep.

I've heard a variety of folks mention that if you want to fly anywhere, this year is the year to do it. You're also likely to find better deals on accomodations this year than normal.

We went ahead and got plane tickets + hotel [3 nights] to Vegas for about $600. We're not big on gambling so $400 will suit us fine. I think next year we'll hit up Florida.

    Re: Honeymoon Ideas?

Have you and wife been to LV before? Where are you staying? Are you renting a car? For some reason, I'm thinking you are going in August, is that right?

McCarron Airport can be a zoo at times. Not to worry, take your time when you get in, you'll be fine; leaving town I suggest allowing a little extra time to get through the airport, especially if you are leaving on a Sunday.

LV used to be good for cheap eats but that's changed to a large degree. The casino owners no longer rely on gambleing to pay the bills. However, there are still deals on buffetts. Sorry that I can't give you some websites but start with tripadvisor and flyertalk as I mentioned above and look for threads regarding dining in LV. Also, search for coupons for dining in LV.

People have said that LV is 'recession proof' but that's not true right now. Do a little searching on the internet that will cut your costs---they're out there.

Ya' might still get some beach time and jet skiing for the wife out at Lake Mead.

    Have a good time!
