Chris Welsh on 700wlw (Hating on reds)

Man did was this guy ticking me off today on the radio.

Just a few examples of his comments made.

"Cubs when healthy are best team in the central no question about it, Now when their beat up the reds have a chance to make some ground"
You cant play guys like rosales, hairston, hanigan everyday. Those guys are fill spot players.
The reds are going to be inconsistent, the pitching is the only thing that might keep them in games
Reds have been getting very lucky with timely hits the past 6 games, i think people are getting worked up thinking we have a yankees lineup when we dont, The reds are going to be very inconsistent at the plate

And i usually dont mind this guy on tv. On the radio geez^ What a party pooper.

I believe the Hairston and Hanigan part, but Rosales ya really don't know what he might do over 550 Plate Appearances in the majors until he gets the chance...

I know Hariston is playing above his head right now, but Ride it while he's Hot...

On Offense? I feel this team needs a Right Handed Power Hitter for the 4 Hole... But what if Joey Votto is the Batting Title guy? What if Bruce keeps hitting Homers?

Maybe this Lineup is good? One man short in my opinion, but what if what if what if?

The Reds don't have Albert Pujols. That's the biggest knock against them.

In all seriousness, though, the Reds right now are about league-average in batting average, home runs, on-base percentage, OPS and walks. I think Chris Welsh would be standing in a long line here on Redszone among people thinking this team needs another big bat, but it's also statistically starting to move away from the sample size concerns and into the concept of what you see is what you get.

Heck, as a team, the Reds have a .260 batting average with RISP. Their BABIP in those same situations are .306. On the season as a whole, they are hitting .300 with balls in play. So clearly, there's not a ton of evidence to suggest they're getting lucky in these situations.

By contrast, the Cardinals, a team Welsh would say is a beacon of situational hitting, is at .309 with RISP. However, they have a .356 BABIP in RISP situations! That's more a case of 'luck' when you consider their overall BABIP is .296.

Everything he said was dead on balls correct. I'll even go so far as to say the starting pitching isn't as good as everyone thinks either. Harang still isn't the pitcher he was two years ago and Arroyo has two starts where he gave up a bazillion runs in less than two innings. I still think Homer Baily will be in this rotation by seasons end.

I am encouraged with the moves Walt Jocketty has made. He obviously saw something in Taveras and Hernandez that a lot of us didn't. Even the role players he's brought in have produced. He's done a better job than I expected. I think the Reds are still a year away from seriously contending for the long haul. I hope we don't trade away the farm in July for a rental player that will give us a chance to make the playoffs one year. I'd much rather holdout and deal for or sign an FA SS and a LF this offseason.

The thing I am most encouraged by is the fact that winning seems to matter to the players in Cincy again.

Wow everyone board the hate wagon after one loss.

I took all of his comments as unispiring.

    And thinking very pessimistically.

I completely disagree with the hairston, rosales arent everyday players.

Last year hairston avg'd .305. Maybe he's having career years with the reds it sure looks like it. I think any player that can bat over .300 on this team needs to be an everyday player.

And rosales has changed the attitude of this team. You sit him for too long and i think he's going to struggle to keep his intensity.

lol, sounds to me like the most on-the-ball things Chris Welsh has said in all my years of following him.

I keep looking for something he said that isn't true.

Maybe some people prefer the "smiling side" of analysis. I prefer honest objectivity myself.

Is there any doubt that Welch is a huge Reds fan? He's just telling it like it is...

I disagree completely with what he's saying. Hairston has been nothing but a solid player in the majors. He's not a 'spot' player. Would he start over All Stars? No. But in a position of need he would start for any good team. He's nothing spectacular, but a career major leaguer. He's like the Ron Harper of MLB, someone who knows what his role is and does it with success. He's not going to bat .320 but he's not going to bat .220 either.

And its funny how many people say he's 'telling like it is' when Marty got bashed consistently for the past few years by dogging Dunn and other players. I guess its 'telling it like it is' when you agree with it, and not when you don't. Completely hypocritical.

His concerns are the same that many of us share. Of course, if he were to be nothing but complimentary, people would accuse him of being a homer.

A surprising percentage of the Cincinnati sports fan base would prefer this.

Does what exactly with success other than fill in at times? He's a career .700 ops player (85 OPS+)...at best average defender...no way he starts regularly for a good team long term...

And "telling it like it is" doesn't get dogged when it's reasonable, but quite consistently, the Dunn "telling it like it is" was never backed up with actual valid stats.

I think he's just being a realist. Why sugarcoat? We need a lot of luck for this to continue.
