Re: The Official 2007 Mock Draft Selection Thread

I had intended to make a grand speech, so I will. Ok maybe not grand, but babbling a bit.

The Devil Rays, in our new commitment to not finishing last, will draft pitching, pitching, and more pitching. First round, we'll take pitching, 5th round we'll take pitching 35th round, you guessed it, pitching.

Anyway, without further ado, and without worrying about sign ability, the Devil Rays are proud to draft with the first selection in the 2007 amateur draft, from Vanderbilt, LHP David Price.

    Class:
    Junior
    Hometown:
    Murfreesboro, TN
    College:
    Vanderbilt

    Height / Weight:
    6-5 / 215
    Position:
    LHP
    Bats / Throws::
    Left / Left

I debated the catcher, but pitching is what this team needs. Price will have a shot to break camp with TB next spring if they really want to rush him and will compliment Kazmir for as long as he's there and his arm hasn't fallen off.

Championships for MY teams in my lifetime:
    Cincinnati Reds - 75, 76, 90
    Chicago Blackhawks - 10, 13, 15
    University of Kentucky - 78, 96, 98, 12
    Chicago Bulls - 91, 92, 93, 96, 97, 98

Re: The Official 2007 Mock Draft Selection Thread

The Royals select catcher Matt Wieters.

The Royals thing to do would be to take the high school pitcher here, but #2 is simply far too risky to be doing that. The Royals can't afford to waste any picks right now.

And with Vitters being a 3rd basemen, it simply doesn't make a lot of sense for the Royals to take him when there are just as talented prospects at other positions.

He should be a fairly safe pick with good upside. He should emerge as one of the league's better catchers in the not too distant future.

Here's what John Sickels has to say about Wieters:

Re: The Official 2007 Mock Draft Selection Thread

I will ask that each of you send a PM to the person that drafts after you, letting them know you have made your pick and that they are on the clock. Hopefully that will speed things up some, and I know it will be beneficial over the weekend. Thank you.

    HotCorner, you're on the clock.

Re: The Official 2007 Mock Draft Selection Thread

The Chicago Cubs select RHP Rick Porcello. [PM sent to KronoRed.]

    Biographical Data
    Player Name: Rick Porcello
    Position: Starting Pitcher
School: Seton Hall Prep, West Orange, NJ
    School Type: High School
    Academic Class: Senior
    Birthdate: 12/27/88
    Height: 6'5"
    Weight: 195 lbs.
    Bats: Right
    Throws: Right
    Report Date(s): 04/09/07
    Game(s): Morris Knolls HS

    Focus Area Comments
Fastball: Porcello ran his fastball up to 96 mph and was throwing 94-95 mph very comfortably.

FB Movement: Porcello showed good movement with his two-seamer and his four-seamer was simply overpowering. The ball was jumping out of his hand.
Curve: Porcello threw his curve in the low 70s.

Slider: His slider sat at around 80 mph.

Changeup: Porcello threw a change in the 80 mph range and it was a much-improved pitch from last summer.

Control: Porcello's command and control were a bit of a concern over the summer, but he began to answer those questions with outstanding command in this outing.

Poise: Porcello was never really challenged in this game, but he showed excellent poise on the mound.

Physical Description: Porcello is a tall, lanky and projectable right-hander with an easy, smooth delivery.

    Medical Update: Healthy.

Strengths: Where do you start? He's got four pitches, especially if the changeup continues to improve, with a plus, plus fastball, great command and terrific mechanics.

Weaknesses: Command of his breaking pitchers hasn't always been there in the past, though it was not an issue in this outing. Pitching in the Northeast, he doesn't get to pitch during the season as much as his colleagues in southern California or Florida.

Summary: There are several interesting arms in the Northeast this year and Porcello belongs at the top of that list. With an oustanding fastball and the possibility of three other above-average to average offerings, he could very well find himself one of the top high school pitchers taken in June.

The Pirates select Ross Detwiler, lhp, Missouri State

We know he's not the top player on a lot of boards but we think he'll be helping a lot sooner then a lot of other names, we want results, not wins for single A

Re: The Official 2007 Mock Draft Selection Thread

With the 5th overall pick the Orioles select Josh Vitters 3B Cypress HS.

    http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/m...jsp?mc=vitters

    Player Name: Josh Vitters
    Position: Third base
    School: Cypress H.S., Anaheim, Calif.
    School Type: High school
    Academic Class: Senior
    Birthdate: 08/27/89
    Height: 6'3"
    Weight: 195 lbs.
    Bats: Right
    Throws: Right
    Report Date(s): 02/05/07
    Game(s): Urban Academy Showcase
    Scouting Video:

    Focus Area Comments
Hitting Ability: One of the most polished high school hitters in the draft class, Vitters has the potential to hit for average and power.
Power: Vitters' plus power was on display during BP at the Showcase.
Running Speed: Not one of his stronger skills.
Arm Strength: Vitters has excellent arm strength and that is his best defensive tool.
Fielding: Vitters' defense is a touch below average, but mostly because he hasn't worked on it as much as he has his hitting. With more time spent on his fielding, he should be an average third baseman.
Range: He's not shown exceptional range at third
Baseball Instinct: Vitters has tremendous instincts, particularly with the bat.
Physical Description: Vitters has a tall and lean, but strong, frame.
    Medical Update: Healthy.
Strengths: His bat. Vitters showed advanced hitting skills, mostly in BP, at the Showcase, the same skills he's showed off at various showcases over the past year
Weaknesses: His defense. Right now, he doesn't grade out as a good third baseman, but could improve over time. If not, he'll hit enough to man a corner outfield spot.
Summary: Vitters likely entered the season as the top high school hitter on most draft boards. He did nothing to upset that with his showing at the Urban Academy Showcase.

I select in 2 picks and was wondering if I could PM my pick(s) to someone to make for me because I plan on leaving in the next hour for the night. Let me know if someone can help me out.

Well guys I am heading out the door. I sent OBM my two choices for who I would like once Topcat makes his pick. If he still hasnt made his pick by the time I get home (whici is probably unlikely) then I guess I will be able to make my pick tomorrow.

    Only since you asked nicely...:

For some reason the edit button isn't showing up on my first post. Can we no longer edit posts that are 24+ hours old? Because the edit button is showing up for the post I made a few minutes ago but not for the one I made last night. Oh well, I'll tjust quote the first post and add the names already taken to it. Maybe one of the mods will volunteer to keep the first post updated since my edit button isn't working?

Board Moderators may, at their discretion and judgment, delete and/or edit any messages that violate any of the following guidelines: 1. Explicit references to alleged illegal or unlawful acts. 2. Graphic sexual descriptions. 3. Racial or ethnic slurs. 4. Use of edgy language (including masked profanity). 5. Direct personal attacks, flames, fights, trolling, baiting, name-calling, general nuisance, excessive player criticism or anything along those lines. 6. Posting spam. 7. Each person may have only one user account. It is fine to be critical here - that's what this board is for. But let's not beat a subject or a player to death, please.

Thank you, and most importantly, enjoy yourselves!
