Re: 2009 Redszone mock draft selection thread

With the 32nd pick, the Colorado Rockies select Jason Kipnis, CF, Airzona State University.

Jason Kipnis only has average tools but outplays them, putting up huge numbers at Arizona State. He has good discipline and power for his size, and has big OPS potential playing full-time in Coors Field...

Re: 2009 Redszone mock draft selection thread

With the 33rd overall pick the Seattle Mariners Select Kyle Heckathorn, RHP from Kennesaw St.

    MLB.com
Heckathorn is sure to be fairly high on everyone's list, thanks to his size, strength and pure power arsenal. He can pump his fastball up into the mid-to-upper 90s, has a hard slider to go along with it and generally throws strikes. The one puzzling thing about the right-hander has been that he hasn't dominated his competition or missed bats as much as you'd expect with that stuff. His size and stuff will ensure he's off the board before long, but he might be a half-step behind the upper-echelon college arms this year.

Re: 2009 Redszone mock draft selection thread

With the 34th pick, the Colorado Rockies select Rich Poythress, 1B, University of Geogria.

Poythress has been graded as both an average and great defensive first baseman. There are no doubts, however, that he has the best power in the draft, weighing in at over 245 pounds. He was very successful in college and the Rockies hope he is the heir to Todd Helton...

Re: 2009 Redszone mock draft selection thread

    Gallen sent his pick in.

With the 35th overall pick, the Diamondbacks select Mike Trout, CF, Millville High School

Mike Trout, CF Millville High School (NJ) Trout is one of the fastest risers in this draft, and could go inside the top 10. Possessing a good power/speed combination, Trout has the potential to hit 25-30 homers while playing a plus center field. He's a little raw, players in the Northeast don't get the experience some others do, but everyone I've talked to raves about his coachability, competitiveness, and character.

camisadelgolf didn't make his pick earlier today, but since we moved along well today, I'll give until tomorrow to make his next pick. If he doesn't show up then I'll give him the BPA and move on.

With the 40th pick overall, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim select:

    Angelo Songco, OF, Loyola Marymount

    Here is the MLB.com recap:

Every Draft class has at least a few pure power hitters in it, usually from the college ranks. Songco fits the description, with plus power to all fields. He's willing to take a walk, but he'll also carry the bat back to the dugout quite a bit. He's likely going to be stuck in left field as a pro as his defensive skill set wouldn't allow another place. That's OK, because the bat should play wherever he is stationed defensively. That kind of pop usually doesn't last too long on Draft day.

With the 41st pick The Arizona Diamondbacks select Chad James, LHP Yukon HS (OK) The last time Arizona took a four-pitch prep lefty from Oklahoma, his name was Brett Anderson. James has drawn several comps to Anderson, but a part of that is just geography. With a fastball he runs up to 95 mph, a plus (or better) curveball, solid change and slider, good mechanics and control, James has just about everything you want out of a young pitcher.

Re: 2009 Redszone mock draft selection thread

With the 42nd pick overall, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim select:

Wil Myers, C, Wesleyan Christian Academy, High Point, N.C.

    Here is the MLB.com recap:

Myers is a very intriguing high school athlete with tools aplenty. His swing needs some work, but he's got the bat speed and strength to hit and hit for power in the future. He's played all over the field and has shown the versatility to handle it. He may deliver the most value from behind the plate, where his above-average arm and agility would play well. He hasn't played that much behind the dish, making it a little difficult to assess his skills there. The team that thinks he can handle the tools of ignorance might be the one to take him early.
