The Reds passed on Beckham becuase they believed (as many did) that he was not going to play SS in the majors.

    It appears that was correct.

I belive that if Beckham was drafted as a 3rdbaseman, he would have fallen even further.

I agree that the Smoak/Alonso comparisons are more accurate.

My favorite thread on this board was when RZ destroyed the Yonder pick last pick and then immediately hoping for Miami (Fl) to lose in the CWS so we could sign him earlier.

And then everyone wanted to trade him because we already have Joey at 1st base.

    Good times.

And the better question might be will the return we get for Alonso (and subsequent major league outcome) be better than any of the three (Alonso, Smoak, Beckham). Because I still think Alonso is trade bait. I don't see Votto moving off first.

In this case I see Votto playing first base by 2011 for another team.

Don't you think that's rushing it?

Eh, I am not sure really. His plate approach is strong enough that I think he will not fall flat on his face. I would be surprised if he were to OPS .800 or better this season though.

Those who say Joey Votto won't play left field must have forgotten he has already played 6 games there when he was originally recalled in Sept. of 2007 . I watched him play there some vs Indy in late Aug 2007 and he did not appear to be lost there.

If Yonder hits well enough the Reds will find a place on the field for both he and Votto.

Makes one wonder if the timetable on Alonso might be the reason that no big LF bat was shopped for...

Beckham is being rushed but being rushed but I doubt its going to hurt him over all that much.

Re: Who will have the better career...Alonso or Beckham?

When I picked Beckham 2 days ago, I chose him with no reservations about what type of career Alonso's going to have. Certainly no one here has praised Alonso as much as I have from the beginning until now, but it's like picking between Jack Clark (Alonso) and Jeff Kent (Beckham). While Beckham (Kent) will probably play for the same team longer and not price himself onto another club as quickly as Alonso (Clark) will, the main difference I see between the two, and I saw them both play their last months in College, Alonso's most likely to be the star of a team whereever he goes, but Beckham will produce a better career just because he'll play for more years, have fewer injuries, have more overall stats, play better defense, and be thought of as the better player by the public. Alonso's more likely to get more MVP's, while Beckham's more likely to get more All-Star appearances. These are two great players.

1.100 OPS at AAA his first week while hitting over .400 might have been all they need to see.

Both players could have gone straight into the Majors. It's merely defensive seasoning that the two of them could have used time in the minors at all. They were both ready to hit in the Majors right out of college and have a normal rookie season, .250 AVG, with .330 OBP and .440 SLG.
