Can you guess this Reds game from the scoreboard?

Today's UniWatch features a Reds game in "Guess The Game From The Scoreboard". Here's the text of the instructions:

Guess The Game From The Scoreboard: This one is difficult, but not impossible. The location should be easy, and there are other clues right there on the scoreboard. You shouldn’t need any hints with this one. Date, location and final score are required. Based on the comments yesterday, if you do get the answer, shoot me an email but post something like “I GOT IT” in the comments. This way, people can take guesses throughout the day. I’ll post the winner’s name and some of the good “deductive” guesses at the end of the day. Ok? Ok! Good luck. Guess The Game From The Scoreboard
Go here and scroll down just a bit to try your hand at guessing this. (I'll readily admit that I don't have a clue.)

Today's column begins with some cool uniform pictures from the 1975 All-Star Game and there's also some Reds-related uniform stuff after the guessing game.

Help stamp out, eliminate, and do away with redundancy.

That was my dad's 40th birthday, just three days after my baby brother was born (the same day Bobby Kennedy died). Dad will be 81 on Tuesday.

A little targeted searching on retrosheet. I started with 1970 and worked my way back in time. I searched for every Cards vs. Reds game with the Reds scoring at least 8 runs, glanced at the box score and looked for the inning scoring pattern. I think the Cards only played in Cincy six times a year so there weren't too many possibilities.

Took me about five minutes to find it. By the way, if anyone wants credit on uniwatch, here's your chance.

The 10 runs scored after two were out. Amazing.

There were a couple of other clues that would help. First, the ad on the board for a late 60's GTO (I think - someone correct me). Also on the lower left, it tells you the dates of an upcoming Cubs series.

I didn't track it down myself, but I knew it was after 1965 because Robinson wasn't in the lineup. Likewise it showed Atlanta playing, not Milwaukee. And it had to be before 1970 since that was the last season for Crosley Field.

I didn't track it down myself, but I knew it was after 1965 because Robinson wasn't in the lineup. Likewise it showed Atlanta playing, not Milwaukee. And it had to be before 1970 since that was the last season for Crosley Field.

I also spotted the "5" for Bench in the Reds lineup. Since it was an early-season series (the Cubs promo) and I didn't remember him coming up until later in 1967, that narrowed it down to 1968-1970 right away. I went to Retrosheet and started with 1968, saw the Cubs series matched the dates, and then saw there was only one game with St. Louis prior to that where the Reds scored 8+ runs. Bingo.

Very good catch on Bench. It's fun to break this down and deduce the game.

I did this once with a Reds photo at the Skyline in St. Bernard, figured out that it was from the 1940 World Series and which game and inning it was. I think I mentioned that here before and someone found the picture online. But it was the same sort of thing. The stadium had bunting, so I figured it was either a Series or the All Star game. It's a great shot too because it was the game winning sacrifice fly in the 7th or 8th inning.
