Did't Dante Bichette have a 10-year span (off from the round numbers) when he led the league in hits?

WOY, not trying to get this off track, but I saw something the other night that I thought was interesting. I was watching Randy Johnson's 19 Strikeout game (vs. Oakland) the other night. They ran something across the bottom of the screen that said that prior to 1903 fouled off balls were not counted as strikes. Is that true and if so what if anything do you take from that?

NL jumped over with it in 1901, Al 03. It helped the batters in the 1890's a HUGE hitting era, one that was taking on the 2nd decade of overhand pitching and the first of a mound and 60 feet. Once they counted as strikes it helped pitcher tremendously. Cy Young's manager in Cleveland felt it helped Cy later on. And coincides with the dead ball era that was as much as result of large fields and other changes as it was because of a dead ball.

    Re: Hit Leaders by Decade

Seeing Ichiro's numbers I can't help think that he could have given Rose a run for the hit record...blasphemous, I know....

I do wonder though, how much does the DH help AL players get more ABs, thus more hits. I don't know the true stats, but lets say AL players get 25 more PA on average than their NL counterparts. Over 20 seasons that is 500 PA, which could give a guy 125-150 more hits vs. the same player playing in the NL. Anyone have anything to add on this?

You could probably win a lot of bar bets with Mark Grace in the 90's.

That one caught me off guard, and also Dale Murphy in the 1980s. He hit .300 only twice (.302 in 1983 and .300 in 1985) and those were the only two seasons he had more than 176 hits in a season.

These are NL/AL only....anyone play in both leagues during a decade that perhaps had more hits? (I checked Frank Rob, he was only at 1603 for the 60's)

Having not gone off to fight WW II helped this somewhat no name accumulate so many hits.

    Bob, was pretty good.

Exempted from World War II military service due to head injuries from being hit by a pitch in 1943, Elliott was named to the NL All-Star team in 1941, 1942, 1944 and 1945, and finished among the top ten players in the MVP voting from 1942 through 1944,

    Re: Hit Leaders by Decade

There is a hit number that still astonishes me: 3016.

3016 is the number of hits Hank Aaron had....if you subtract the 755 home runs he hit.
