Ah, yes, Corky Valentine. Born 1929, Died 2005. Quite a character and he isn't exaggerating much when he talks about his pitching. How he did as well as he did as a rookie in '54 is a puzzle. Had a 4.45 ERA that year along with 3 shutouts He was back in the minors (to stay) by early '55.

Tim Lollar was the Micah Owings of his time. A good hitting pitcher but a mediocre, at best, pitcher. He had two hits and two RBI in this game. I looked him up on Retrosheet and he had 8 HR's and 38 RBI in a six year career. I always wondered how good an everyday player he might have been.

Nuxhall had a temper that got better with age. When I read his book it was mentioned often the scrapes he got into because of his temper when he was younger.

I remember it was around 1983 or so, Nuxhall was trying to get a Cub to be on the "Star of the Game Show" and not one Cub who had a good game would go on the show. I vaguely remember the win was a big one for the Cubs for some reason but they were to busy celebrating to be bothered with Joe and his interview. Joe really lit in to the Cubbie Bears for no one wanting to be on the show and it was UGLY!!!
