Predict what Strasburg gets from the Nats

    We know he's asking $50Mish.

The question isn't what should he get, it's what will he get? And yes, $0 (and him going back to San Diego State) is an acceptable answer.

I think he will sign and it will be between $15-20M...but I don't know the exact amount. I'm going to guess $16.5M.

    What say you?

Re: Predict what Strasburg gets from the Nats

Before answering, I would like a rule clarification. The Nats most likely will have the #1 pick again next year. If they don't sign him this year, can they just take him with the #1 next year? I know that they can't take him with the #2 that they will get for not signing him, if they don't sign him, but what about the #1 that they are almost certain to get next year?

If they can do that, that would give them exceptional leverage.

    Thanks in advance.

A team can't draft a player a second time without his permission, so not likely.

Re: Predict what Strasburg gets from the Nats

Washington really needs to sign him so I think the leverage is all Strasburg's. He can just go back to school. The Nats can't re-pick him next year (that's assuming he'd refuse permission and let them know it now). Their fan base is clamoring for this, their #10 was a signability pick which points to them trying to conserve bonus dollars and I doubt they'll be offering over slot to anyone else. They also knew his demands and his agent so they must have been ready to deal out the dough.

$17.5 million, a major league contract, and a promise he'll get a chance to pitch in DC this season if he signs fairly quick.

It's tough to see Strasburg not signing -- he's already succeeded in raising salary expectations to the point where $15-$20m seems fairly reasonable. Plus, frankly, Washington ownership needs the good PR that comes with getting "Baseball's LeBron" to sign with their team.

Having said that, it's Scott Boras. I wouldn't be shocked to see anything happen.

How about with their non-compensation pick? I thought it was only with their comp pick.

    I say $15MM.

This could have JD Drew written all over it.

Or Steve Francis, for that matter.

thanks for the info. That makes sense.

I guess $22.13M, back loaded, 6 year deal, major league contract and a promise to have him called up in Sept.

I don't think Strasburg would care whether he became a J.D. Drew or Steve Francis who both ended up making something. His worry should be whether or not he becomes a Matt Harrington.
