I'm seriously considering buying the new one -- my contract with Sprint is up at the end of the month.
It's a dilemma I face: I've had nothing but fantastic experiences with Sprint in the 6 years I've been with them, but their phone selection currently stinks (especially for Blackberries, where they're almost a year behind Verizon and AT&T). The Palm Pre looks interesting, but the Palm Treo I've had for the last 2 years has been nothing but trouble -- I've replaced it three times and it still only connects to the internet when it feels like it. I'm never buying a Palm product again.

It's boring but I find the built-in email incredibly useful. Along with the contacts. The social networking stuff is cool. Skype on the iPhone, to me, sounds better than the regular phone.
There's a DirecTV app for setting your DVR when you've forgotten.
Zombieville USA is an excellent game!
For games I like Word Warp and Toobz.
I should also note that the new iPhone 3G S comes out June 19. It will feature the ability to record videos in addition to an upgraded still camera. With the release of this upgraded version, the orginal 3G price will go down to $99 (with contract). THe 3g S will go for $199 with contract.

Yeah, I got mine about a month ago. I now wish I would have waited a few weeks and save $100, but my old smartphone wasn't getting it done for what I needed to manage my work.
Apps I use regularly:
Flixster
Pandora (love this one. I use this in the car)
WeatherBug Elite
NY Times
Wall Street Journal
Pandora
Shazaam (very cool app)
Yelp
ViewTi Golf
mtLite
CBS Sports

I do. I have a 1st gen and was waiting for the 3rd (wasnt hugely pumped about the 3g to be honest).
I use mostly
Bejewed2
AppSales (for devs like me)
FML
Slingplayer
MLB At Bat
i was pumped when I heard about the cool crap on this one though I wanted a matte finish on the back and a front facing camera for me to never use but brag about.
I am also a developer so check these ones out. All pretty cheap.

Just bought one today, the price drop finally sucked me in.

The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
I heavily use the MLB At Bat application. It's $10, but they've just added the feature of the complete game wrapup videos that are 10 minutes long, showing every pitch in play from that night's game. As long as you have a good wifi or 3G connection, it's an excellent perk. I use the score & gametracker on a daily basis.
Amazon's app is fantastic - since I sync'd up my amazon account I've actually made several purchases using my Amazon Prime free 2-day shipping setup.
Some of the others already mentioned I use a lot as well - Facebook for um...facebook, Flixster for movie times and The Weather Channel.
Guitarist is awesome and fun, you can find some videos on YouTube that shows you the interface but it's highly entertaining.
I still haven't found any good photo taking apps I like and hate the stock option camera program. And on another note, not being able to delete the stock programs like the Stocks, Weather and Camera that come with the phone is highly obnoxious.
As far as games go, I've shelled out for Tetris, Bejeweled 2, Peggle, Labrynith, Wolfenstein, Fieldrunners & Oregon Trail. Topple is a fantastic free game, as is Tap Defense. I've spent more hours than I care to admit playing Fieldrunners.
I tried to go the mini-Kindle route and downloaded some e-books but the screen pitch is just too draining on my eyes.
But mostly I just use Safari & Google Reader. In fact, if I cut out all the fluff, and just add Safari (With Google Reader), my Gmail sync'd, MLB at Bat & Fieldrunners I'd be good.
I just downloaded Peggle. They cut the price to .99 and I couldnt resist.
I think I live on MLB At Bat...
