Reds' Weekly System Rundown #9: 6/4-6/10

    AAA Louisville

    Record This Week: 4-1.

    Overall: 30-28.

    6/4: More mediocrity from Sam Lecure (L 2-5, 5.96, 5 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 7 K, 1 HR) as Pawtucket spanks the Bats, 7-3. 1B Wes Bankston did hit a two-run homer (#9) and SS Danny Richar kept swinging a hot bat (2-for-4, .279, 6-game hitting streak).

    6/5: Rained out

6/6: The Bats survive a three-spot put up in the top of the 1st by Lehigh Valley (PHI) and RALLY to beat the IronPigs on LF Danny Dorn’s eighth-inning two-run homer, 5-4! Dorn pushed his average to .232 by going 3-for-4 on the night. Richar: two more hits (.286). CF Drew Stubbs went 0-for-3 but drove in two runs (sac-fly, groundout). Starter Ramon Ramirez settled down after the ugly first, although he’s still showing control issues (5.10, 6 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 5 BB, 3 K). Ben Jukich retired six straight in relief (!) to get the victory (W 4-2, 4.86, 2 IP, 1 K). Josh Roenicke went 1-2-3 in the ninth for save #8 (3.48).

6/7: Homer Bailey pitched through his second straight scoreless start (W 6-5, 3.41, 6.2 IP, 7 H, 0 BB, 6 K, 111 pitches, 77 strikes) as Louisville made it two straight over LV, 4-1. Robert Manuel came in with the bases loaded and two out in the seventh and whiffed the IronPigs’ Jason Donald to strand three (2.18, 0.2 IP, 1 K). One out into the eighth, on came Pedro Viola to finish the inning (3.68, 0.2 IP, 1 H, 1 BB). Only Jeff Kennard serving up a bomb to Jason Slayden broke the shutout. Fourteen hits for the L’ville lineup, including three for Stubbs (.294, 2 R, steal #19) and three for SS Drew Sutton (.263, R, 2 2B). Bankston had two hits and two RBI (.223).

6/8: Bats build a 6-1 lead with the help of 1B Kevin Barker’s two-run homer (#7, .236, 2-for-4, 3 RBI), a Mike Griffin RBI hit, a run-scoring Dorn double, a Stubbs RBI hit, and a Bankston RBI double. Lehigh Valley chased Justin Lehr in the sixth with three (W 7-2, 4.22, 5.2 IP, 8 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 5 K), but again Robert Manuel came in and ended an inning by getting a flyout. Adam Pettyjohn then loaded the bases in the seventh, but Pedro Viola came in to get the next two outs without a run scoring. The IronPigs did get a run off Viola in the eighth (3.80, 1.2 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K). But again Roenicke came on to slam the door in the ninth (save #9, 3.32, 1 IP, 1 BB). Insurance runs scored in the seventh (Sutton triple, Barker single) and eighth (Hopper sac-fly) made the final score 8-5. Louisville SWEEP? Stay tuned.

6/9: Despite a slow start (both runs in the first three innings), Sweet Sam Lecure settles down nicely to stymie Lehigh Valley on three hits over eight innings (W 3-5, 5.49, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 1 HR) as Louisville scores the SWEEP~!, 7-4. Sutton, playing SS again, slammed a two-run homer (#3) and Bankston added #10. C Craig Tatum had two hits and two RBI (.250); over his last ten, he’s hit .355. RF Norris Hopper was 3-for-5 with two runs scored from the leadoff slot (.294, steal #11).

    6/10: Off.

Moves & Notes: (6/6) UT Wilkin Castillo returned from Cincinnati to replace LHS Matt Maloney, who was called up.

Homer Bailey was named International League Pitcher of the Week for the period June 1-7. Bailey won both of his starts with a perfect 0.00 ERA while whiffing 14 and walking just two in 14.2 innings.

Ex-Reds: C John Purdom was released by Florida. Milwaukee added RHR Mike Burns to its 40-man roster. Minnesota released LHR Mike Gosling. Houston placed LHR Andy Van Hekken on the temporarily-inactive list.

    AA Carolina

    Record This Week: 4-2

    Overall: 33-26.

6/4: Carolina didn’t even need nine innings to beat the crap out of the hapless Smokies (CHC)- 12-3 to make it eight straight Mudcat wins and twelve consecutive Tennessee losses. Interestingly, the best hitting line came from C Chris Denove, who was a perfect 4-for-4 with a walk, three doubles and two RBI (.236). RF Sean Henry was 3-for-4 (one of those hits a home run, #5, leading off the Carolina first) with four runs scored. Sean’s now up to .315 thanks to a .353 stretch from May 4th to June 4th. Not to be outdone, CF Chris Heisey hit a two-run homer (#10) and a RBI single (.384). And LF Todd Frazier, Heisey’s compatriot on the BA Hot Sheet, was 2-for-3 (including minors-leading double #24) with two walks, a run, and a RBI (.337). SS Zach Cozart homered for the second straight game (#4). The only hitter who really didn’t get in on the action too much was 1B Yonder Alonso, 0-for-4 with a GIDP, walk and a run scored (.313). Returning-from-injury James Avery didn’t need to be great on this night (W 2-3, 2.89, 5 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 81 pitches/50 strikes). Sean Watson retired six straight (4.13, 3 K)

6/5: Streaks have to end sometimes, as Jacksonville (FLA) beat the Mudcats 5-2 behind seven three-hit innings from 29-year-old veteran Nic Ungs. Alex Smit started but had to leave the game one out into the third with a stiff back; it’s not considered to be serious. Smit was charged with the L (L 2-1, 3.08, 2.1 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 1 HR). New signee Tom Cochran started a little roughly, but settled down nicely in long relief (2.70, 3.2 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 1 HR). Logan Ondrusek got the final two outs of the game for Carolina; he’s now up to 10.1 scoreless innings since his promotion. 3B Juan Francisco smashed a ninth-inning solo homer (#11).

6/6: Zach Stewart threw six innings of two-hit ball (and drove in a run with a sacrifice fly; W 3-0, 0.39, 3 BB, 8 K) as Carolina got back on the winning bus with a 2-1 victory over the Suns. Two more scoreless innings for Logan Ondrusek (0.00, 1 H, 1 BB, 3 K) and save #4 for Ramon Geronimo (4.07). Three homers in four games for Cozart (#5) and Francisco with a pair of singles (.250). Alonso: 1-for-4 with a single (.250) and a fielding error. LF Logan Parker collaborated with Cozart to throw out a runner at home plate in the fifth to save the Mudcat lead.

6/7: Travis Wood got himself a mention on both Baseball America and Baseball Prospectus for this gem, a three-hit, no-walk, eleven-strikeout complete game win! Wood is now 5-3 with a 1.22 ERA; it took him just 107 pitches to spin this one. Both Mudcat runs came on homers; Cozart’s fourth in five games (#6, 2-for-4, .283) and LF Todd Frazier’s 4th (.340, 2-for-3).

6/8: Jacksonville scored three unearned runs (so designated because of an error on 2B Jose Castro) in the sixth off Jordan Smith (L 4-1, 2.95, 5.2 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 3 K) and went on to beat Carolina, 6-4. Before that sixth was over, both Mudcats manager David Bell and CF Chris Heisey (1-for-2, BB, .371) were ejected. The rally wiped out the one-run lead granted Carolina by Francisco’s 12th homer, a two-run blow.

6/9: Chris Heisey homered in the top of the 12th (#11, and Logan Ondrusek got the Suns out in the bottom of the inning (W 2-0, 0.00 in 14.1 AA innings overall, 2 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 2 K) to lock down a 3-2 win! Heisey was 2-for-6 overall (.370) but Juan Francisco might officially be on a hot streak- he smoked four hits (.256, 2B, R). Cozart was 2-for-3 with two walks and steal #5 (.290) but also committed two errors (15). Lefty Tom Cochran started and went four (2.53, 3 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K). Sean Watson continued his recent hot streak (one ER in his last 10 IP) with two hitless frames (3.86, 2 BB, 4 K). Valiquette (5.40, 1.1 IP, 2 BB, 1 K) and Medina (3.41, 0.2 IP, 1 H, 1 K) kept it going, but an unearned run on Ramon Geronimo got the Dominican an undeserved BS (3.76, 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K).

    6/10: Off.

    6/11:

Moves & Notes: MORE Chris Heisey in the BA Prospect Hot Sheet. Blame his 13-game hitting streak. Todd Frazier and his 14-for-28 between 5/29 and 6/5 joins him for this edition.

Oh, and Heisey- along with RHS Zach Stewart- received the watches for May from the Reds organization as the Hitter and Pitcher of the Month. Chris hit .404 with 4 HR and 17 RBI in 29 G, while Stewart was 2-1 with a 1.04 ERA in 5 GS.

    Carolina swept the weekly league honors for June 1-7: SS Zach Cozart (10-for-29, .345, 4 HR, 2 2B, 7 R) and LHS Travis Wood (0.00 ERA and 6 H in 15 IP, 1 BB, 17 K).

(6/6) LHS Alex Smit placed on the 7-day DL; C Korey Feiner activated from the DL. (6/10) RHS Dallas Buck activated from the DL; RHS James Avery put back on it with elbow tendinitis.

    High-A Sarasota

    Record This Week: 2-5.

    Overall: 23-34.

6/4: First Sarasota overcame a 4-2 deficit with three runs in the bottom of the eighth, then Brevard County (MIL) tied it at 5 in the top of the ninth (with an infield single one play after a throwing error by 1B Jason Louwsma) to send the game to extra innings. Both sides plated one in the tenth, as a balk with two outs in the bottom of the inning saved the tie for the Reds. All quiet until the 14th, when the Manatees scored off Mike Bohana (L 0-1, 9.00, 2.1 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K) and Jesus Carnevale (8.53, 0.2 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 K) to take a 7-6 lead. The first two Sarasota hitters went quietly, but 2B Jake Kahauleilo managed to reach first after striking out due to a wild pitch. He then stole second, but 3B Neftali Soto grounded out to end the 14-inning extravaganza. SS Justin Tordi was 2-for-6 with two RBI (key ones in the eighth) but committed two errors. C Devin Mesoraco (.207, 2-for-4, R, RBI, 2B) and CF Denis Phipps (.244, 2-for-4, 2 R, RBI, BB) both had good nights at the plate. Starter Rafael Gonzalez lasted five (3.72, 5 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K). Mace Thurman covered the next three (3.60, 3 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K), FSL All-Star Enerio Del Rosario the next two (1.78, 4 H, 2 ER, 1 K), and Justin Freeman the tenth before Bohana and Carnevale.

6/5: Revenge for the S-Reds! C Jason Bour’s RBI single scored Jake Kahauleilo with the winning run in the bottom of the 10th, 5-4. Bour finished with three hits and two RBI (.271). Louwsma was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and a triple (.241, RBI). Two hits apiece for Kahauleilo (.279, steal #3), Phipps (.250), Tordi (.155), and newly promoted 3B Jose Gualdron. Gualdron also drove in two, including the key ninth-inning RBI hit that scored Louwsma with the game’s tying run. Luis Montano started and went five (6.08, 5 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 1 HR). Josh Beal struggled in two (4.00, BS, 4 H, 2 ER) but Joe Krebs fired three scoreless to get the win (W 3-1, 2.36, 2 H, 1 BB, 3 K).

6/6: The Manatees broke open a tight one in the later innings of lefty Jeremy Horst’s outing (L 2-6, 2.85, 7 IP, 7 H, 5 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 2 HR), scoring four in the seventh to beat Sarasota, 6-3. Mesoraco drove in all three Reds runs with a two-run homer (#3) and sacrifice fly. He’s now up to .210. DH Jason Bour kept hitting (.290, 2-for-3).

6/7: Five errors and a starting pitcher off the “effectiveness” wagon doomed Sarasota to a 10-5 rout at the hands of Tampa (NYY). Jerry Gil had won his last three straight, but the Yankees sent him out to the woodshed (L 3-7, 7.74, 1.1 IP, 7 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 3 BB, 2 K, 1 HR) as they built an 8-0 lead through two. Five runs in the sixth did make it a game , as Bour slammed a three-run homer (#2, 2-for-4, .303) and RF Denis Phipps added a two-run double. But Tampa added a couple more insurance runs off a tired Josh Beal (3.46, 4 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K).

6/8: Sarasota turns it around, beating Tampa 4-1 behind starter Travis Webb (W 4-4, 3.66, 5.2 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 5 BB, 5 K) and Denis Phipps’ three hits and two RBI (.259, steal #4, CS #5). Joe Krebs (2.22, 1.2 IP, 3 K) and Enerio Del Rosario (save #1, 1.67, 2 IP, 1 H, 1 K) fired strong relief to close it out.

6/9: Raffi Gonzalez threw six solid innings (L 0-2, 3.55, 4 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 5 K) but was outdueled by Tampa starter Brad Zink, 2-1. Mesoraco homered for the second time this week (#4) for the Reds’ only run.

6/10: Sarasota wasted no time striking in this one, as Jake Kahauleilo led off the first with a double and scored a couple of hitters later on Phipps’ single. Spotted the run, Luis Montano proceeded to get bopped for two in the bottom of the inning by the Yankees. This is pretty much the way it went- one for us, two for them. Tampa wins it, 7-3, chasing Montano after four innings (L 4-6, 6.37, 7 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 2 K, 1 HR). Phipps finished 3-for-4 (.266) and 3B Neftali Soto scored two runs after walking and doubling (.263).

    Moves & Notes: (6/6) 1B Mike Konstanty sent back to Billings and INF Mariekson Gregorius reactivated. (6/10) INF Kevyn Feiner sent down to Dayton;

    Low-A Dayton

    Record This Week: 4-3

    Overall: 24-35.

6/4: Josh Ravin avoided the One Bad Inning and turned in his best effort of 2009 (W 2-7, 4.26, 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K) as Dayton beat South Bend, 6-3. LF Dave Sappelt was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, a walk, a triple, and a RBI; 1B Humberto Sosa had two hits and two RBI (.241). Dragons Pitcher of the Month for May Aguido Gonzalez got the final four outs, stranding a pair of inherited runners, for save #5.

6/5: His brief promotion to Carolina (and subsequent win) seems to have energized right-hander Curtis Partch; he tossed six solid innings to help Dayton past South Bend, 8-4. Partch (W 4-3, 5.02, 5 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K) got help from Scott Gaffney, who threw the final 1.1 for save #2 (3.33). The offense poked 15 hits and stole a total of five bases. Three hits, three RBI, and two steals from 1B Stephen Chapman (.237) and three hits, two runs, and two RBI from 3B Carlos Mendez (.306). CF Andrew Means doubled twice (.260, steal #3). DH Kyle Day was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, a walk, and a RBI (.270) and SS Miguel Rojas was 2-for-3 with two runs (.230).

6/6: After seven strong from Lance Janke (3.53, 6 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 1 HR) led only to a 1-1 deadlock, Great Lakes (LAD) managed to get the deciding run off Aguido Gonzalez (L 0-3, 3.04, 1 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K) in the eighth to nip Dayton, 2-1. The Dragons got their run in the fourth when Means doubled and scored on Mendez’ single.

6/7: A rain delay kept JC Sulbaran on the bench, but Drew Bowman came out of the pen to strike out seven in five one-hit innings (5.12). The bullpen then blew a 2-0 Dragons lead, but 2B Cody Puckett singled in Dave Sappelt in the top of the eighth to tally the deciding run! Junior Martinez got the win and the blown save (W 1-0, 4.91, 1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 2 BB). Gonzalez struck out three in the ninth for save #6. If Sappelt hadn’t teamed with Rojas to cut down the trailing runner at home on the game-tying play in the seventh, Dayton would likely have had to go to extra innings.

    6/8: Rained out

6/9: MAKEUP MADNESS! In game one, Great Lakes gets to reliever Mike James in the bottom of the eighth (L 1-1, 3.48, 1.2 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K) for the game’s only run. Lefty Oscar Castro, who’d struggled for much of this year, pitched very well for six innings (5.77, 3 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K). Just three hits for the Dayton batters.

Game two headed to extra innings tied 2-2, but DH Kyle Day’s second homer of the year in the top of the eighth and a perfect 1-2-3 bottom of 8 from Steve Otterness (2.77, 2 K, save #1) gave Dayton the 3-2 win and the split. Another strong start for Josh Ravin (4.14, 6 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 4 K). Junior Martinez got the win with a flawless seventh (W 2-0, 3.86, 2 K).

6/10: Dayton drops another nailbiter, 2-1 to Fort Wayne (SD). This time, the Dragons scored one in the top of the ninth after Day and Coddington singled and moved up on a wild pitch. Frank Pfister’s grounder was mishandled for an error that scored Day. Kevyn Feiner was inserted as a pinch-runner for the runs-like-a-catcher Coddington. But Andrew Means flew out to short right and Dave Sappelt went down swinging to end the game. Another very strong outing for Curtis Partch; he lasted a season-high seven innings (L 4-4, 4.73, 4 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 2 K) but was saddled with the L. SS Miguel Rojas picked up two of Dayton’s five hits (.241, BB).

Moves & Notes: According to fan voting, the May Dragons Players of the Month were SS Miguel Rojas (.268, 2 HR, 16 RBI, 13 R, 1st in MWL in FPCT) and LHR Aguido Gonzalez (1.20 ERA, 11 G, 15 IP, 25 K).

Miscarriage of justice in the MWL All-Star selections, as 2B Cody Puckett (.303, 10 HR) wasn’t selected to join LHS Matt “ACE” Fairel and C Kevin Coddington. The quote from Dragons manager Todd Benzinger: ““Puckett should be the A-number-one guy on the team. There are questionable things, then there are travesties. This is a travesty.”

(6/6) 1B Humberto Sosa sent back to Florida, replaced with C Jake Long from Billings. (6/10) INF Yen-Wen Kuo DL’ed with a concussion; INF Kevyn Feiner sent down from Sarasota.
